I'm driving a '98 A4 Avant, 1.8, NON turbo. From a full tank, to half empty, which I reckon is about 25 litres, i've covered 90 miles. This is all urban driving. I work that out to be about 16mpg, surely that's not right for a 1.8.

What kind of faults might be causing this? I occasionally get a slightly oily smell if I drive a short distance, but its unusual.

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Well i have found since changing my engine to a turbo one ,i now have better MPG than when i had the 1.8 NA engine.

It does sound a bit excessive, try changing the temp sensor, it made mine better as the ECU was getting the wrong signal and making the eng run rich

Try to calculate more accurately your fuel consumption.
Are you doing realy really short trips? Engine might be cold most of the time =) more fuel burned. Check the way your sparks look. If there is something wrong there, you will notice it on the sparks. Let's say 20 litres would be somehow acceptable, but not 25.
Do you see smoke in the mirror? Does it burn any oil?
