Volkswagen has broadened the family appeal of its Touran compact MPV still further, with the addition of a new diesel engine and the option of a Multimedia pack.
The new 1.9-litre TDI powerplant produces 90 PS, and is available in S trim at the entry point of the Touran range. With its generous torque output of 155 lbs ft delivered between 1,800 and 2,500 rpm, it is not short on flexible, brisk performance. And by utilising Volkswagen’s highly praised ‘Pumpe Düse’ (unit injector) system, it is also very efficient, with low emissions and combined fuel economy of 47.1 mpg. A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard.
The new diesel joins the 1.9-litre TDI 105 PS and 2.0-litre TDI 140 PS engines in the Touran range, as well as sophisticated 1.6-litre FSI 115 PS and 2.0-litre FSI 150 PS direct-injection petrol units. Volkswagen’s pioneering DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is offered in conjunction with the most powerful diesel engine, providing the advantages of both manual and automatic transmissions with none of the drawbacks.
The Touran is already a great vehicle for children as they have plenty of space, but now they needn’t complain of boredom on long trips thanks to the availability of an integrated Multimedia pack. With a 7" screen mounted in the centre of the roof, its DVD player is perfect for keeping the kids amused on lengthy journeys with, for example, the latest Disney blockbuster.
The Multimedia pack is more than just a DVD player however, as CDs and MP3 files can be played on it. In addition, it can be connected to camcorders and games consoles, making it a truly versatile package.
Up to three sets of headphones can be connected, all with individual volume controls. However, for more of a cinematic experience, the sound can be played through the car’s stereo system. Of course, the Multimedia system can be operated independently of the stereo if desired, so that the front occupants can listen to Radio 2 while the kids enjoy cartoons. The whole system can even be operated by a remote control unit.
The Touran is unusual in its class for offering the choice of five or seven seats, with no premium for the extra row of seats. Family buyers will be reassured to know that it is also one of the safest vehicles in its class, with ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme); ABS; HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist, which can reduce stopping distances significantly); driver, front passenger, front seat side and curtain airbags; and active front seat head restraints all fitted as standard. Indeed, in the stringent Euro NCAP crash test programme, the Touran received a maximum five star rating.
Prices for the Touran range start at £14,380 for the S 1.6-litre 102 PS, with the new S 1.9-litre TDI 90 PS costing £15,350 (RRP on the road). The Multimedia pack is available as an option across the Touran range with immediate effect, priced at £1,500 for the SE and Sport, or £1,560 for the S model (which receives a speaker upgrade as part of the package).
