Transmission "Whine". Any Ideas?

My 2001 Passat TDI has developed a "Whine" from the transmission. sounds similar to a wheel bearing, but only there when in gear. Sounds a bit like an old mini ! Dont think it is the gearbox as that was replaced 20k miles ago. It has done 170,000 miles. Any ideas? Many thanks.

I have the same problem with a 20v turbo. Having had it inspected by a competent gearbox specialist he said it was the diff bearing, had it replaced and the noise has gone. Sounded like a wheel bearing had gone but having changed both it was the diff bearing.
