Excuse my basic terminology but here goes. Have been fitting a new sony stereo to my 99 avant 2.4 se non bose . Was doing ok until rear speakers wouldnt work. I found out that the rear speakers were amplified and got them working by feeding the amplifier/s. They are now crackling/distorting because of the higher speaker levels of the sony compared to the amp out of the original concert stereo. Where are the amplifier/s located? Can I bypass them? Help!

Just because the Sony is a higher output than the Audi unit shouldnt make a difference. An amplifier should actually overpower the speakers to avoid distortion.

It is actually when an amplifier struggles to power speakers that distortion occurs.

I would suggest that you check the wire connectors, especially the blue remote wire.

The rear amplifiers i understand are attached to the rear speakers.

Sounds like you have the same problem I did - What you have almost certainly done is connected the rear speakers the wrong way round.
On the sony loom the wire without the stripe is the positive and with the stripe is the negative. I made the same mistake and connected the positive from the car loom to the wire on the Sony loom with the stripe. It was fine at low volumes but as soon as you turned it up a bit distorted like mad - especially on the bass.

Checked the Sony wiring diagram and switched the wires over and problem solved. Give it a go !

You may in fact need to run a power converter on the Sony output wires to bring the signal out to pre-amp level as it sound like you are hitting the amp with a high speaker signal.

If you have RCA outputs then you could use this:

this should do the job and by the way the amp is mounted on the passanger side rear speaker.

As far as I can tell now the positive/negatives are wired the right way round it works as it should. Sound quality is extremely good and can now go to high volumes with no distortion. Cheers anyway !

hi, I am searching this forum in the hope someone can help me, and I came across this posting so I thought I would ask.
I have fitted a new head uni to my Audi S3 and now I cant get any sound from the rear speakers. ve read the manuals back to front and got nowhere. I have been to a couple of garages and they say they dont do audio stuff and there is no one who specialises in it near to me.

The head unit is Pioneer DEH-P65BT if that is any help to anyone.

Thanks in advance and sorry bothering you.

Davy

Well if like the A4 the rear speaker are amped then you will need the lead above plus I hope you used the correct adapter lead as you may not have connected the remote lead up.

As far as I can tell it was the correct adapter for the model I have. Remote lead???? didnt read anything about that one, does it need to be connected for the rear speakers to work? I get sound from the front ones fine. If so, what colour is the remote lead and what do I connect it to, cheers again. Im willing to try anything, not many people are willing to give advice when it comes to after market stereos. Mind you with the hassle I'm having with this one, Im not surprised.

Ive fitted another 2 stereos for friends into their cars with no problems since buying mine, so how stupid do I feel....!!!! lol.

Is your system Bose?

If so they require a special adapter but if not then you may just need to use the above adapter and run the rear speakers of your RCA output.

Have a look at the rear speakers and see if one has a large thing round one of the speakers this should tell you if it is amped or not.

I don't realy know the S3 so I would have to see one to give the correct info.
