I have a Passat on a 54 plate 130 TDI. Will my car have the waterpump
with plastic impeller and has the pump been redesigned. Although my car has still got a year to go before it is due a cambelt change. Should I get it changed early and get the water pump done as well. How likely is it to fail? Are there early signs I should watch for or will it just go and cook the engine if I do not stop in time.

Your car will have a plastic impeller but don't worry too much; failure of these on the TDI's is less common than on the 1.8T and a much exaggerated problem anyway. The replacement pumps from VW still have plastic impellers and I have never known a replacement fail. What is far more common is failure of the water pump bearing due to the pump not being replaced with the belt. Just get it done at 4 years or 60K miles and you should be fine.
