Hi,

I’m confused about the engine choices available in the C8.

I’ve read the Evo Magazine and Auto Express Reviews.
Link: 2019 Audi A6 review - does the new A6 finally drive better than its rivals? | Evo (https://www.evo.co.uk/audi/a6/22720/2019-audi-a6-review-does-the-new-a6-finally-drive-better-than-its-rivals)
Link: Audi A6 review | Auto Express (https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/a6)

From the reviews above it says there’s the following choices:

40 TDI – front-wheel drive, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch
50 TDI – quattro, eight-speed Tiptronic torque converter
45 TFSI – quattro, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch
55 TFSI – quattro, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch

The detail in the review says

The 40 TDI’s 2-litre EA288 diesel power unit now uses an alloy rather than a steel block, for claimed refinement benefits and 20kg less over the front wheels. It’s a little more potent than the old diesel too with 201bhp. This engine propels the A6 from 0-62mph in a decent 8.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 153mph. While it can’t match the effortless surge of its six-cylinder counterparts, the weight advantage the four-cylinder block brings means it delivers a purer, lighter-feeling driving experience.

The familiar turbocharged V6 diesel is badged 50 TDI and cranks out 282bhp and 457lb ft to the road. As mentioned above, it uses an eight-speed Tiptronic torque converter automatic, a its quattro system uses a self-locking centre differential. This 3.0-litre V6 engine branded 50 TDI propels the A6 from 0-62mph with similar speed to the 55 TFSI (taking 5.5 seconds) but does so while feeling slightly heavier – though it’s almost 20 per cent more fuel efficient.

The 45 TFSI model features a 242bhp version of the EA888 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to the seven-speed S-tronic. Despite similar numbers to those found in a Golf GTI, the two are worlds apart on the road, lacking much of the Golf’s enthusiasm - not surprising considering the two cars’ very different missions.

The 55 TFSI features the 3-litre turbocharged V6 petrol borrowed from a previous Audi S4, and its quattro system uses a multi-plate decoupling clutch. The 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 has a 0-62mph time of just 5.1 seconds and so the 55 TFSI closely matches the BMW 540i’s 4.8-second effort.

However looking on the Audi UK configurator today for both an A6 and A7 I can only see:

40 TDI – front-wheel drive, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch
40 TDI – quattro, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch
45 TFSI – quattro, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch
50 TDI – quattro, eight-speed Tiptronic torque converter

The 55 TFSI isn’t there?

I can’t seem to find an A6 brochure or pricelist online (grateful if anyone can share the link), but for the A7 it gets odder still with both petrol and diesel flavours of the 3.0 engine listed but neither of the 2.0 engines?

50 TDI – quattro, eight-speed Tiptronic torque converter
55 TFSI – quattro, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch

Can anyone shed any light?

Are some of the engine options coming soon / already discontinued?

Thanks.

For reference:
My C7 A6 has the 3.0 V6 TFSI petrol engine. That’s the supercharged one, from the B8 S4. They stopped doing it part way through the C7 production life.
The 55 TFSI petrol mentioned in the reviews for the C8 A6 is the turbocharged one, from the B9 S4.

For me, the 55 TFSI is the natural successor to my C7. The S6 was the possible step-up, except that now they’ve gone and made it diesel instead.

You cannot rely on the Audi website as being accurate at the moment as the A6 and A7 model ranges seem to be in a process of being changed and rationalised. A lot of options that were available until recently are no longer available and Audi claim to be offering a Vorsprung version of the A6 (fully loaded with almost all options as standard) yet it is not int he configurator. As things stand in the UK (and also in Germany) Audi seem to have dropped the 55TFSi option on the A6 although rumours suggest it will be available with the Vorsprung trim level, so the only petrol option available on the A6 is the 45TFSi. The A7 has the same engine options as the A6 so no 55TFSi. Audi seems to have completely messed up the whole switch to the new WLPT emissions testing so it may be that the 55TFSi was not a viable option once tested in the same way that the S6/S7 in Europe now have a diesel engine rather than the petrol engine of old. The RS6 and RS7 are due to be launched at the Frankfurt show in September and it may be that after that we will get some clarity on the engine and trim options

The A7 brochure you link to is from February last year (when the A7 was launched) so does not reflect what is offered now and Audi seem to have stopped publishing brochure for any of their ranges (at least on the website), instead expecting you to use the configurator which is next to useless as it is inaccurate, with some option choices missing. Your only option is to go and see a dealer and get them to confirm to you exactly what option choices are available

The Vorsprung has literally got everything ticked from full leather everything, heated rear seats, HD matrix lights, 4 zone climate control and more...

But it’s not worth £70k+ imo but that only because I wouldn’t tick all the option boxes. Disappointing that I’d go for HD matrix but can’t now as the options removed.

No biggie but you can’t even debadge the car now [emoji15]

Vorsprung 45TFSI is price TBC still on the internal docs that the sales chap was looking at [emoji1360]

Thanks for the replies.

Hopefully Audi UK will keep something in-between the 4cyl golf engine and the RS6.
