Pollen Filter

Recently brought 2013 A4 Avant Black Edition. After couple of week the smell the vents was like rotten eggs. Pulled the pollen filter, which looked like it had never been changed from car was new. I had mould growing on it.
Changed the filter and the worst of the smell has gone, still getting bit when car is first started. Think I may need to clean the inside the pollen filter housing.
Can the section of the ventilation system be easily removed, if not what is the best way to clean it out?
