Hi All,

I've had my new car for 2 months and am averaging only 38 mpg, even though my mileage is mostly motorway trips at 70mph.

Previously, I had two of the old model 1.9TDi Avant's (5-speed) for three years each (you can tell I'm a fan!) and always got around 45 mpg.

I use cruise control most of the time and use aircon around a third of the time.

I like the new A6 in general, but it doesn't seem to be any faster than the old model and there doesn't seem to be any reason for such a drop in mpg.

Is this typical or should I get it checked out?

Any comments or advice appreciated.

Mike.

Thats low.

A rep who calls in here reckons he gets 50mph and doesn't drive it too carefeully.

The given figures are around 56mph extra urban and 45mpg combined.

I would take it back to the suppling garage and ask then to check it out.

Sorry if you find this insulting to your intelligence, has it been serviced recently?

Thanks for the response, Buster. I'll get it checked out.

Paul, I haven't yet had the car serviced because I've only had it for less than two months and it's not due yet.

Mike.

The 2005 manual 2.0 tdi I had used to do around 50-55 on motorways, not hanging around either. The 07 multitronic I have now does about 40mpg - the auto really saps the fuel.

I just got a 2007 2.0TDi 6 speed saloon about 2 months ago.

The computer says I am averaging 41 mpg but when I work it out on the calculator it works out at 32 mpg. The first tank I got 495 miles which was enough to upset me but when I got 460 miles from the next tank I am gutted.

I have come from a VW Passat and I would get an average of 47 mpg. I would get 550 miles with the old car and the new get 100 miles less and costs me £15 more per tank to fill up.

Really disapointed - Will look to get rid soon

on my 2.0 tdi 55 reg i get around 42-45 mpg in town, sometimes less but not more for sure, and I drive not exactly carefully, but not recklessly. i change gears at around 2-2.3 rpms. highways give me 50-55 mpg, when driving 90 mph, and about 60 at 70 mph with cruise control. i think ur mpg depends pn how you drive it, i think if u really want to make a difference, use cruise control even in town, works good.

Thanks very much for responding. Just out of interest how many miles do you get from a full tank?

2.0 tdi manual saloon 54. About 48mpg on a decent run.

I have managed 700mile on tank (long trip), although I have had the "miles to go estimator" much higher. On mine it gets scary at the end, as it "hides" the last 10litres of fuel.

Short trips and Oxford traffic are the killer and it is much worse than my old 1.9Tdi A4 98 (an awesome car).

Have you recently checked your tyre pressures?

Hi there, have the A6 (07) 2.0 tdi remapped to 176 which does make a difference in all respects.
stop start and around town constantly gets me around 37 - 38 mpg
When on motorways and sitting at 70 - 80 on cruise I can get anywhere from 45 - 48 mpg
Once some time ago, I did a run to South Wales and was determined to check fuel economy on such a long run.
Motorway on cruise at 70 mph, a few short blasts at 100+ as I was running late, then again at 70 on cruise for 90% of the journey and pretty much all m,otorway driving. I filled up at approx 690 miles driven with the comp showing around 40 still to go...Thats 730 miles and great in my book.
Even better, when I topped it up the comp told me that if I drove the same journey using the same driving style I could expect 915 miles:biglaugh:

I certainly think the remapping has helped fuel economy by around 10 - 15%

crusie control is convenient & great for average speed camera zones but a killer for fuel economy.....switch it off for a month & see the mpg rise...
