:aargh4: Please help!!!!

I have an A4 2.6V6 '96, 5spd Auto. My idle control valve seems to not want to work and I'm told I need to get hold of a wiring diagram. I have taken the car to a Bosch 'Expert' and to an Audi 'Specialist'. I say expert and specialist very lightly, 1 told me it was my wiring loom, and the other said it was the throttle body. I have changed the throttle body, and it wasn't that. The idle control valve has been manually set and the problem I had, high idle revs all the time (1500 at idle, 35mph with no accelaration) has gone, but obviously I need to get this sorted properly, and I don't fancy paying Audi prices, not when I can get my Dad to do it for nothing. If someone knows of a book, manual etc that has all necessary wiring diagrams in it, I'll buy 1. I've also lost my permanent live for the stereo, but that's not so important. I really do hope someone can help with this, so far it seems I have got 1 of the rarest Audi's built. Many thanks, Em

1500 revs at idle sounds like a ECU reset when the battery is just about flat and that puts the engine mapping in weird no power mode... (in a previous post i also made the mistake of jumping it too)

take the battery off check the voltage and charge if req... (with the battery off ) turn on your lights and turn on the ignition this will remove all static from the car.. replace battery and restart the 1500revs should vanish so no manual control valve setting should be required
if its still not running right check the oxygen probes... the V6 2.6 has 2 but only uses one, the other is a spare... swap em over and see if that helps... blocked or sooted up oxy sensor is a cause for a few probs and the age i'd say is about right to check it.

Hi, thanks for letting me know this, I'll give it a try and see if it cures my problems. I managed to locate a wiring diagram and it seems that the idle control valve is fine, as I thought, and the signal is getting thru from the ECU, although the pins / wires are the wrong way round. There is some slight confusion over the ECU I have in my car, the part no. of my ECU does not match that of other A4 2.6 V6 Auto's. Whether this is the problem, or could be, we haven't confirmed yet. Like I said, I'll try what you have suggested and post a reply with the outcome. Thanks Again, Emily

It has a different ECU? i take it that you have had the car a while and has been running perfectly fine before this problem started... different ecu could mean its been replaced at some point possibly off a manual V6 2.6 or 2.4.

can you get me the ECU number and any other codes on it and i'll get a friend of mine to check it, he knows an Audi mechanic and i'll see what i can dig up.
might not be until monday or tuesday but it might help to clear up the ecu query.

better yet if you have a digi camera take a pic of it and send it to my address

if you wish to contact me regarding the car in future using the above address feel free to do so, as i dont check the forums very frequently.

check the vac hose from the cyl head to the ecu for perishing if its not that then it could well be the cam sensor, if the cam sensor fails the engine has long cranking as the ecu tries to find cyl 1 to fire plugs in the right order and you were right about the map sensor it is in the ecu.
