The speedo started playing up yesterday afternoon sometimes working sometimes not making it a real risk in speed restricted areas. Has anyone any idea what might be causing it ?

Thanks

The speedo cable could be damaged or the plug loose. Think it connects to the gearbox so you need to trace it and see if there is damage or anything loose.

Recent abs sensor fault on left front = no speedo, check for fault codes. I don't think the gearbox is used for the Speedo any more even though there are plugs on the gearbox for it.

Thanks. Do you have the same problem as well as I'm still no nearer resolving mine ? Local classic car garage had to begin with already replaced left front abs sensor with Audi original part and checked fault codes - all OK . Next Motatec couldn't identify it later on either so still unsolved....

Have you checked the reluctor ring on the driveshaft, these can crack and upset things.
The driveshaft is easily removed, loosen the large cv bolt 19mm allen bolt, jack up the car, remove the wheel, then six torx bolts on the inner cv joint, you can either have someone press the brakes while you loosen them or put a screwdriver in the disc vent slot to hold it. You will need to put one wheel bolt to hold the disc also.

Thanks, no idea about car mechanics at all so will pass it on.

I'd also originally asked Motatec to check out some of the instrument cluster warning lights as well, especially "Service due in...." that had been intermittently appearing and disappearing as well as the speedo intermittently not working at the same time all without luck, so could this mechanical reluctor ring perhaps be the root cause instead and not an electrical fault....?

It should set a fault code ie, speed signal intermittent.

Thanks, so check the reluctor ring situation first.... ?

Well it was my first thought but sounds like an instrument cluster. Let me know how you get on as I have one spare.
