Squealing passat!

My 1999 1.8 se passat, squeals on start up and for a while after, but when the engine warms up after about 10-15 mins it stops.

Changed the water pump-power steering belt but not solved the problem, any ideas?

Are the belts properly tensioned? A good measure is that you should not be able to twist the belt over 90 degrees on a long run between rollers.. Generally only happens when in the winter due to lights and heater and de-mist being on, this puts more load on the alternator hence making it harder to turn and then the belt slips..

think it might have something to do with the alternator as it wouldn't start when i went to use it today! Battery flat! bloody cars!!!

I had this problem - turned out to be the aircon auxillery fan,

best way to test this is to switch air con onto economic mode next time it squeals on a cold morning, if the squealing stops -its the fan, double check it with the bonnet up

replacement cost £50 from GSF, to replace it you just need to undo one screw at the top and twist anti clockwise

to get a bit more finger room, remove the plastic air duct above it
