hey,

I've got a a3 1.6 year 1997, my car keeps over revving (3000revs) even when its in neutral diagnostic check does not show anything wrong, has any one else experienced this and know what the problem is or might be, i've been told it may be a sensor the temp sensor but there not sure either....

You need to get a fault code read done and this will probably show a faulty coolant temperature sender. The ARL bit is the engine code found in the service book, on the sticker on the boot floor and on the cam cover sticker. These engines are very prone to idle problems.

im gonna change the temp sensor tomoz to see if that helps who does a fault code check? do you know what the temp sensor is actually there for?

The temperature sensor tells the engine computer (ECU) what temperature the coolant in the engine is at and so the ECU’s program (map) can use this info to compensate the fuelling, ignition and idle control strategies to suit the temperature. The sensor also provides the instrument panel with its temperature information. The fault codes can be read at any decent garage with fault code reading equipment. The AKL engine also suffers from a dirty throttle body like other VAG products but in addition to the Basic Setting 04 that is required by all others (in your case it is sub group 098 of basic settings) the ECU needs to have its learnt values erased in adaptation 10, sub group 00 otherwise you end up with a very high idle.

Only if it reads extremely low, say -40°c.
