All,

A short while ago I completed a second retrofit for fellow forum member Steve on his lovely Q7 S-Line in Orca Black. (First was Drivers Side Seat Memory Buttons).

This was a Rear View Camera retrofit as the car only had the parking sensors as standard and involved swapping out the rear door handle for a new handle that contains the camera, relevant connections to the MMI Unit, Power and Coding.

Install took about 3 hours to complete.

Lovely Car:

34989

New vs Old Rear Door Handle:

34990

New Rear Handle Installed and cabled in:

34991

Wire Routing:

34992

Removal of MMI Unit and Glove box and wiring into the relevant MMI Connectors:

34993

Finished Camera:

34994

34995

Cheers

Andy

Great work Andy, are you able to share ball park costs for this retrofit? Thanks

Andy,

Are we full 'plug and play' albeit with a few bits of trim to remove ?
Thanks muchly, Iain

Hi, thanks for this insight. I'm looking to do the same but haven't found a reasonable guide on the boot trim removal/cable laying along with connection to the relevant box in MMI. Is there a guide you would recommend on this please? Thank you.

Rear camera coding - Is it ok?

Module 19 Gateway

Select Installation List
Check 6C Rear View Camera
Save

Module 09 Central Electrics

Select Coding
Go to Byte 35 and check Bit 4
Exit and Do it!

Module 5F Multimedia

Select Adaptation
Search for VPS
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS set the new value activated and press Do it!
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS_msg_bus set the new value Terminal 15 and press Do it!

Whatever that bit does may somewhere else in different control module versions, so you should make sure it looks like the right thing to be setting rather than doing it blindly:

Go to Byte 35 and check Bit 4

I can't comment on the other parts.

Hi Andy, where did you tap into for CAN wires? I believe this camera uses extended CAN system for communication?

The easiest place I found is at the connector for the adblue control module behind the right rear luggage compartment side trim. Check out the service manual for details and wiring diagram.

If you have some of the more advanced driver assistance modules the extended canbus wire might be present behind the left side trim by the fusebox, but mine didn't.

Hi mate, yeah I did see that in Erwin last night, J880 Control unit for reducing agent metering system seems like has extended CAN also, much easier than tapping into GW under seat :) thanks for confirming.
