A2 central locking works occassionaly

I have a 2001 A2 1.4 petrol which i have had very few problems with. Recently the central locking from the fob has been playing up. Sometimes it will open but most of the time it doesnt. Was hoping it would be a nice simple new battery, but that hasnt worked either. When it doesnt work from the fob i can use the key to open the drivers side door, then put the key in the ignition to open the other doors. I have tried my spare fob, same thing happens, i have tried new batteries in both fobs. I have read about central locking pumps failing, but didnt think it was this as it is still working from the key. Also have not heard any strange noises from the car when i try to open it. Anybody got any ideas??

Might the key need re-synchronising? It is a bit of a long-shot if it does it with both keys but you never know. On my A6 you put key in ignition on engine off and lock the car from inside and it should be re-synchronised.
