The rear wiper on my 2008 Avant has developed a mind of its own. It comes on and goes off by itself. I've pulled the fuse for now. Wiper motor shorting out perhaps? I think the switch is ok. Just wondered if this is a common fault before i start looking in the wrong places.

Thanks! That’s what I thought. Just after I found a replacement motor in eurocarparts my wife has told me it’s gone to the dealer for repair for 3 times the price :aargh4: The joys of working away from home. :(

On your 99 4B A6? If yes, there is a rebuild kit for the motor under part number 8L0 998 711 for £59.20 or a new motor under 8L0 955 711 B for £139.40. DIY this could be worth it BUT professionally fitted it takes a good hour to strip, clean, grease and rebuild which typically adds £70 so £60 becomes £130 and the rebuild kit suddenly makes no sense and if the rebuild kit fails, can you imagine trying to get warranty on it at an Audi dealer 18 months after you fitted it?

Loads of ebay *** 955 711 wiper motors , they're the same .

I bought a Bosch 4 years ago for £52 .

Bosch don’t list the 8L0 955 711 B, it was made by Valeo and there are many aftermarket sources. 0 390 201 592 is a 1J6 series unit used in the Golf 4, Octavia 1 and others

No, different arcs of sweep, arm fitting, mounting point, all sorts.
