Hi,

Had my 15 plate passat b8 estate gt for 6 months now and love it, however i've noticed when at 2000 rpm is any gear i hear what sounds like a vibration coming from behind the dash somewhere in the centre. Its not the actual dash vibrating itself sounds like its coming from the engine bay, but hen outside the car you can't hear it only when inside the car driving?! It's really annoying while driving at 70 and you put your foot down to overtake!

Anyone had anything similar? coming to the end of its warranty. :-(

Thanks in advance guys!

It is quite often the engine cover or even just the badge but sometimes a lose air cleaner top.

Did you ever solve the problem? I’ve got the same issue too.

I’d like to avoid taking it to a dealer if possible.

I have the same problem too. I had a long argument with VW over a few weeks when I tried to convince them it existed. They refused to investigate under warranty. It’s now out of warranty and I’d love to find out how to fix it!

Not sure if it’s the same problem but my from new 2015 GT saloon had a similar noise / vibration at 2000 rpm coming from the area you are describing. My dealer worked out that is was a loose pipe and clip(s) used for the heater matrix or something in the engine bay. Sorted in the first year and haven’t had any recurrence since

On the 240 PS bi turbo there is a heat shield over the right hand inner CV boot which can crack and buzz, it should have been removed under a "quality improvement program" but the heater feed pipe issue is the most common reason on cars upto VIN wvwzzz3CzGE172650. There is a full TPI about the issue, 2042131/3

Reading around and this all points to the heater matrix pipes.

According to another forum, Heater pipes going into the matrix were rubbing on a square edged piece of plastic and wedging a piece of rubber in the gap appears to stop the noise.

No pictures unfortunately.

That’s the thing! Glad we could help. As I said my dealer sorted it out very quickly. You should be able to get it fixed now

I had this on mine. Heater matrix, easily accessed from the passenger side by removing the big plastic trim on the side of the "transmission tunnel" you'll see the aluminium heater matrix, the feeds are probably touching, gently move them apart. I also added some foam for extra NVH properties!

thank you for your information. my B8 150ps saloon suffer the same issue. Do you think the owner can solve it DIY? "big plastic trim on the side of the "transmission tunnel" what is that position? thanks.

very nice solution from yours. how much you pay to dealer regarding this issue. Is it a complex work? or DIY possible?

Ours has been doing this since we’ve owned it (20k and 20 months ago) but after reading this I asked the dealer to look into the issue when I was having the car serviced yesterday - when I handed the car over the service guy said he wasn’t aware of it but they would do a check for technical bulletins.

They rang in the afternoon to confirm the service had been done and there was indeed a VW bulletin for this to be undertaken if the customer mentions it (rather than it being a recall or automatically undertaken) and that it would be covered by VW if we paid for a diagnosis (£60), I pointed out the car is on a 2 year extended warranty until the end of October so it was FOC but for those out of warranty it would be a £60 repair.

The wording on my service sheet is;

Code ‘51 LAB’ carried out fix as per technical information to rectify customer issue of heater matrix pipe vibrating. Now all OK’

I don’t know if this is Vindis wording and coding or VW but hopefully it can help others. I can confirm the issue was completely absent on the journey home.

That’s my second free service and the benefit of my 2 year warranty, more than a happy with that!

I’ve applied the fix myself. Took 10 minutes and what a difference.

My car went in for a service and I asked the dealership to have a look explaining that there was even a TSB.

Needless to say they couldn’t find any issues despite test driving the car.

After some more searching, I found a description of where to look.

There’s a side panel down in the passenger footwell (RHD Cars) that’s attached to the centre console. This is held on with a torx screw.

Remove the screw, give the panel a light tug and if you look inside to the left, you’ll see two pipes. Push these aside and that’ll cure the rattle.

They were very close with no bracket separating them. Poor design there.

Hi friend, would you please mark on your photos, which ' two pipes' you mentioned.

my vw specialist also open this panel and add a piece of Buffer foam between heater matrix pipes, but no fix

finally, I found the answer from vw german forum

one cable tie could fix!
