It looks to me that it has been collapsed by pressure from the pump, due to the filter material being blocked.
Either your oil was very contaminated or the filter is of poor quality.
I once had an air filter (on a Mini) sucked in in the same way in wet weather when the filter medium became impervious due to the moisture, and actually stopped the engine.
I had to remove it to get the engine running again. I suppose it is possible that your oil filter became blocked in a similar way due to being stored in a damp place.

Thanks, I know the oil wasn’t that dirty, about 3000 miles, I’m going to assume a lower quality filter. I have a 2003 Golf TDI with 260,000 miles and never had a problem. Thanks you

That is down to the membrane media becoming blocked causing the filter to collapse in on itself. I suspect either low quality filter and/or wrong grade of oil used. You can see where the pleats of material have collapsed. Luckily for you, you have only done 3k so hopefully you wont of starved your engine of oil.

Never mind the obvious waisting, look at the twisted writing, possible twist deformation due to inadequate lubrication of the matting faces as the cap is torqued down.

Hello jeeringtowser, I don’t remember the brand, I think I got them at ROCKAUTO and knowing me I’m sure I went for the cheapest. Now I’m using MANN and no more problems. [emoji106]
