Hi guys/gals,

My recently purchased Audi A4 2001 (newer shape) has gone into 'limp home mode' 3 times in a month. Twice this occured when it was pouring with rain, and once it occured as I pulled out of a car wash.

The symptoms are that the cars falls to 1200 revs only, the ESP light comes on and the Glow Plug light lights intermittently.

The first time it happened I took it to a Audi specialist garage who diagnosed the accelerator switch was faulty. It was replaced and all was well until I went in the car wash. This time I limped home and was advised by my bro to disconnect the battery and leave off overnight. When I reconnected the battery the fault had cleared and all was well. I had it checked out and nothing was found.Last week I was driving in the rain and it happened again! I disconnected the battery for 3 hours, and again the fault cleared.

I have now given it to an official Audi garage. They have changed the accelerator switch again, but they also found a fault in the steering rack.

I'm not convinced the fault is fixed permanently. I'm presuming the fault is water related, but wouldn't know where to start.

Any ideas greatly appreciated?

Hi smash! Taking a longshot guess at what you describe it seems possible that the alternator might be susceptible to water ingress, causing the ESP (electronic stability program) and glow plug (engine management) lights to come on because they will if the alt doesn't work! If the problem dogs you more I sometimes visit your town. :) www.car-electrician.co.uk (http://www.car-electrician.co.uk)
