Broken clutch pedal

Hi I have a Mk4 golf and the clutch pedal went yesterday. Got the old pedal out and welded new clip fitted to the end of the rod. Problem I have is I can't get the clip into the bracket on the pedal. Should the rod move? It seems to be to close to the pedal.
