hi i have a golf mkiv GTI (2001) and have just had the oil warning light come one. I was just wondering if it is OK to simply add more oil to the engine or is it best to get an oil change at a garage as i dont know what type of oil is in there at the mo?

Also if i can just add the extra oil what kind goes in my car? - (ive just moved house and cant find my manual!) and will it matter if i buy one kind of oil that is not exactly the same as the oil currently in my engine, as ive heard its best to stick to the same type of oil?

Cheers for your help

i should think that you have got 5w-40 or 10w-40, but if you are still unsure just get an oil change, but use oil that has the spec vw501.00.00 or vw502.00.00

could anyone verify this because ive just been into a local shop which are usually pretty good and he didnt have a clue when i said does any of your oils meet the VW501.01 spec?

The oils pretty low in the car and i dont want to drive to a VW garage because its miles away. if i go to another local shop and get a 10w-40 should this suffice?

you can't just mix oils grades, because when the oil heats up the two oils will thin at differance speeds,
i drive a v6 4motion and the oil i use in that is 5w-40 fully synthetic, on the bottom of the oil bottle it has written meets vw.502.00 and vw.505.00, if you do an oil change and use that oil you will not have any problems, if your garage dose not know about oil requirements and oil specs i would not use them,
