View Full Version : Is 218bhp enough?

Hi, I am thinking of moving from an A6 to an A7.

Currently driving a 177 2.0 TDi A6 and I like the idea of a V6 for extra smoothness but I can see a choice of 218, 245 or 272 engines out there.

Obviously I will work on the assumption that more power is more fun but has anyone got a 218 they are happy with?

Thanks

I would look at the torque differences .

I would never get that option, A7s are heavy for 200hp, that is not enough...Even the 245 option is low (my petrol A4 has more HP).

My A7 is a 272 and it's about right for this size / weight of car, the 218 is probably fine most of the time but would be working quite a bit harder

Isn't that engine also only front wheel drive?

Petrols often have more bhp - but lose out in the torque which is what makes the speed. The 218 has 369lb of torque which is a decent amount.

The answer to the OP is that depends on your driving and I would try them out. The 218 will be refined and in real world driving perfectly fine. The 272 has a greater turn of speed but is less efficient (the 245 is the old 272). There is a 313 that is even more rapid but there is a significant trade off in economy.

Thanks all. Didn't know the 245 was the old 272. Trying to get a loan car arranged.

I have seen a quattro 218 on Auto Trader so I don't think so.

My bad typing - the other way around!! The 272 replaced the 245. Likewise there was a 205 before the 218. There was a mild facelift around 2015ish

The 218 came in both front wheel drive and quattro.

I have a 218bhp 2 wheel drive stronic ultra just coming up to 3 years old with 42k.

I have not found it wanting for power in everyday use. I tend not to use the eco setting as that does dull the response of the engine and gearbox too much and can make it feel sluggish at times. If you drive in comfort or normal drive mode it is fine and you can always drop down a gear if you need for the occasional boost. It is rare these days that you actually get a clear road to drive a car properly at speed. Fuel economy has been in the range of about 44mpg long term which is pretty good for a big V6 car. However the quattro and more powerful engine would be really good if you can afford the extra and the poorer mpg.

Great, thanks, that's good to know.

Perfect, thanks, I was wondering where the 205 fitted in. I suppose the Ultra engines came in during 2015.
