View Full Version : Whoops! Snapped this bolt. What size is it? Can I still drive the car?

Hi all, snapped the head off this bolt while changing my cv joint:

33059

The one that goes from the top downwards. It was a 13mm end, does anyone know what size I need to order to replace it with? And how to get the snapped thread out? And if it's ok to drive for a while without it?

thanks

An easy out will get the snapped part out. I'd show your local dealer what you need and they can normally get parts the same day/next day.

Are you saying you've snapped the bolt head off the bolt that goes on the top of the track rod end and pulls it up into the steering arm, (the one that goes downwards as you say) or the pinch bolt that holds the track rod end into the steering arm?
If it's the bolt in the top then I'd say ok to drive in the short term as the pinch bolt is what secures the ball joint into the steering arm, if it's the pinch bolt head then you risk having the bolt work loose and then rely on just the top bolt to keep you going straight. Either way I'd say these are MOT failures and need sorting out. Maybe easier to just renew the track rod end rather than try to work a drill and easy out in the wheel arch and if you've already got the rod end off just renew it.

Yes that's the one! I'll buy a new track rod (tie rod end the same thing?)

cheers
