(S)Q7 MIB2 MMI Official Update - April 2017

Dear All,

I wish to share some information around the MMI Unit and software update for that unit on the S(Q7) 4M as I've seen other threads about software updates and so forth.

There is now an official update from Audi Germany to the MMI unit. This update is aimed towards a large number of known bugs and provides fixes for these (an example is the volume control knob on the centre console "sticking").

This update takes the MMI unit software level "0976". I have applied this update, and been successful. It has also updated the firmware of my Bose System. One would assume it may contain an update for anyone with B&O. There is also an update for the TV Tuner if you have it.

Few things you need to know:

1. You can't apply this yourself. You need to go to your local dealer to do it.
2. The dealer will need to order in an SD card containing the update. This could take a few days if they don't already have it.
3. Its aimed towards bug fixes (and for reference, I do not have the complete list of bugs it fixes), not new features, like providing Audi SmartPhone Interface support.
4. It took about 1 hour on my car to do so expect the same for yours.
5. All existing settings are retained post update.
6. You can't apply this with ODBEleven or other tools. You must go to a dealer to apply.
7. If they can't find it, you should reference the TPI number: 2042635 to them and they should find this on the Audi Database and then go from there.
8. Don't blame me if they say its not applicable for your car. There are many variants of MMI unit depending on your car configuration, so there is a chance this won't apply to your car. For reference however I have MMI High with TouchPad, Virtual Cockpit, Phone Box etc.
9. This does not update the Virtual Cockpit in any way.

The latest version coming out the factory for new cars is 0917. As this is a bug fix update, its why you wont see this on new factory ordered cars. Don't ask me why, I don't know, its just they way it is.

Have I seen much difference post-update? Not really, it feels a little quicker, but it could be placebo. I havent seen any glitches/problems yet.

This took my MMI unit from 0358 to 0976.

I can confirm POI uploads from the MyAudi site work fine on this update over the air. I have not tried via SD card.

I hope this helps, this is informational only and I'm not going to provide other information about the update as this should come from Audi, not me. I just want you guys to be aware such an update now exists (it got released back end of March 2017) and is worth applying.

Hi Max,

Correct, cars leaving the factory will be on 0917, and this would need to be applied by a dealer afterwards.

I always think its good to be on the "latest and greatest" software of anything so no harm in asking dealer about this now and getting them to order the SD Card. If the card is in stock in Audi UK it will arrive next-day, if its at Audi AG on back-order, then its about a week or so.

If you mention the glitches you have with the MMI then its effectively classed as a "warranty" issue and therefore Free of Charge (plus they will look under the TPI and see its classed as a warranty piece of work) given that it addresses bug fixes. It doesnt "add" any new functionality. The whole update should be FOC in my opinion.

No, you can't keep the SD card unfortunately and you wouldn't be able to do anything with it anyway as it needs an online connection to Audi HQ to do the update, hence the need to get it done at a dealership.

Nah, not worth it Max. Dealer may already have it anyway, or they just order it in. You dont really pass SD cards around between dealers :)

Hi Arpad, its hard to tell I'm afraid and I don't work for Audi

Remember, dealerships and even countries wont know about an update unless its considered a 'critical' update by Audi AG, to say something security/safety related. Dealerships would have to actively go looking for the issue in their Database to see if there is a resolution/fix to it, for example your POI upload

What I will say is I have not seen a POI issue logged in the Audi System that this MMI update (0976) resolves although yes, it seems to work for me but then it was never broken for me either, so to be fair to a dealership if its not there in the system they are not going to find it.

Best route is to say to your dealership about this TPI, get them to confirm it applies to your VIN number and if it is, get it done and do a good reset on your MMI to default. Then retry the POI upload again. Thats the route I'd take. If it still doesnt work after all that, then at least you rule this out.

Thanks, I appreciate that you try to answer my question, but I intended as a rhetorical question here.

As you mentioned, the question should be answered by Audi Hungary. I am talking to Audi Hungary, same as Audi UK here, not the dealership. I was told that they logged my problem with Audi AG way back in March. Now I sent an email with all your info to the guy who is responsible at Audi Hungary for all MMI related issues, we will see what he will say.

Incidentally, in order to deduce if there has been hardware update to the mmi could you tell me if your chequered flag, that indicates the destination goal in the navigation screen, is now animated (waving) after the update as opposed to a static icon?

OK, the POI problem on 0917 version got solved by Audi looks like on the server end, thus this update will not need it for this alone. I will ask Audi Hungary about this anyway.

Ah ok. What we really need to answer this is a slightly older car (MY16 or earlier) which has had the latest update applied. That should eliminate the variables to conclude as to whether there has been a hardware update. Thanks anyway.

I've just received this update to my late-2016 model Q7 (which has CarPlay) - It took me from 0442 to 0976
Update is not coming up as a "campaign" update - so upon collection and realising it hadn't been done, (as it wasn't a campaign update), they had to get an engineer out who once he understood the details from the opening thread went away and came back with the magic SD card! it was showing on his list as the latest version available for A4 and 2016 Q7 - didn't mention 2017 models.
took about 30mins to install (in workshop, needed hooking up to a battery charger), hopefully we'll see some improvements, I don't appear to have am animated destination flag.

as a note - Car was in as I got an ad blue system fault, 600 miles to drive - has just had a whole new add blue tank as the pump is integrated within it!

Yep, it seems to only be for us Q7 2016 folk I think, and even then within certain build week dates.

I recently (earlier this week) had my 7/2015 build date Q7 updated from 0358 to 0976. Got it by telling the service rep that I had had random reboots (at least twice), one instance of freezing, and that my smartphone loses USB playback connection after 20 seconds (haven't tested whether this now works). They also updated my auto transmission software (don't know from what version to what version), and reset the shifting point adaptations, as I complained about transmission lag when almost coming to a standstill and then accelerating. Haven't really had time to test out if the resetting did any major changes, but so far I haven't paid attention to the transmission at all since then (which is the way it should be, so maybe it worked).

No waving checkered flag for me either, and neither can I find anything else new or improved in the new software. Seems to really be just bug fixes, as far as I can tell. Don't have an iPhone either, so can't test that.

Bad news - they called to say they couldn’t apply the MMI software update due to where the dashcam fitter had taken the power from. Didn’t quite understand it but it sounds like they piggybacked the radio instead of dedicated fuse.

I asked how much they would charge to fix it but they came back and said all they would do is rip it out and fit an Audi dashcam for £450!

I’ve asked them to put in writing what the issue is so I can go back to RAC / Chameleon to get them to sort it out.

sounds like they are just being funny as you had Rac fit it rather than the Audi dealer you went to

apart from power surly this wouldn't affect an update?
and at the worse case remove the inline fuse to the dash cam or remove the power wire update the MMI then reconnect

im guessing the dash cam isn't connected to the MMI unit or MMI screen in any way?

sounds like you need to do some digging to see if they are just saying that

This is due to the fact that the forward facing camera is believed to be wired into or attached to the J159 control unit. There are faults logged for cam communication, we believe this due to the camera being fitted into this circuit.


It would be advised that the camera is removed from this control unit or circuit and wired into the fuse box at the side of the dash.

I have DIY:ed my dashcam (Mobius) install, and tapped the rear view mirror for power (using this guide (https://www.audiworld.com/forums/q7-mkii-discussion-211/dashcam-install-via-mirrortap-success-2904619/) as base). As far as I could find, there are no accessory switched fuses in the side-of-dash fusebox, only constant power ones; you need to go down to the lower fuse box for those. Of course, mine is an LHD model, so YMMV. Also, if you're looking for always-on power, this is not an issue.

I also just had the update done, and they said nothing about the camera; even though I'm sure they noticed it, as they disconnected it while doing the update (I checked the recording, and saw them point at it before it lost power :P ).

My 07-2016 (German) Q7 E-Tron visited the dealer for a few days to get some warranty work done. I had some awkward behavior from the MMI (loosing my Audi Connect Username and Password and restarts). Yesterday the dealer called me to inform me that they needed the car another day because they were waiting for an SD-card for a bigger update.

Before leaving the car I had the 0678 software version. After picking up this is still the same. Does this mean that the update was not completed? Although my car is a 2016 car my VIN is WAUZZZ4M1HD. Does this mean I have an early 2017 build with 2016 software?

Not necessarily. If you had the update to 0976 you would see it. But, there are other bug fixes to the mmi which don't change you software version level so I suspect they applied one of those instead.

Sorry Piero, I'm not sure I'm afraid

How did you apply the update? Did you use ODIS or via "another method" :)

If you chose the latter then there are no-pre checks done to see if it could affect other modules in the system and that may be why you have lost sound (its a bit of guess that of course).

Whereas if you use ODIS to apply the update it will also update the Sound System (47), TV, DVD etc if you have these components installed as part of the process.

good morning I downloaded and tried to read files in the car but the mmi can't read the files. The cue format is not really recognized instead the wav format is recognized and reproduced but only a deafening whistle is heard......

Sadly. These files playing on new MMI versions. I checked on 1329. Unfortunately 0976 does not update the media driver.

hello all new to forum and new to Q7 just got my self a 2016 Q7 13,000 miles in it and lots of extra but the phone app thing has been playing up, when trying to read txt or email keep scrolling then says not email or txt , if i force rest the mmi it then works for a bit, but then have to do the sama again, after chatting with Andy my mmi is out of date i still have the 0442 fw, and needs updating so, it is booked in for end of Feb to have them look at it and do the update, i have all so emailed them with the details of the update they need to be putting on, so with any luck this should get sorted

Hi guys, newbie in the forum. Recently bought myself a well specced 65 plate Q7, loving the car so far. I've been trying to the software update done but no luck so far, I called pretty much all the Audi dealerships in West Midlands area but not had a sensible answer yet, most of them weren't sure.

My SW version is still on 0358.

Did anyone manage to get it done in any of the dealerships near Birmingham or Leicester? Is this something you have to pay for?

Just had a call back from Leicester Audi - they said there aren't any existing campaigns availble for my car, I wonder whether its end of support for the car or just that the update not available for my car.
