One rear temperamental light - 2010 Polo

Hi,
I have just bought a 2010 polo, and it is fine, apart from a temperamental rear light on the left - indicators work, but lights don't...
I have checked the bulbs and they're fine, and the lights work occasionally.
Any suggestions,

look at the wiring leading up to the connector and trace them back to where they go into the body, do they go in a round hole, where they should be a rubber grommet for example ? The wires may be frayed and shorting out

Failing that, put in new bulbs, checking if the bulbs are offset ( the wee pins in the bulb casing are going in correctly into the bulb holder) . They don't all sit opposite each other and not go in one way

Cheers - despite the bulb not being broken, I replaced it, and now working...
strange :P
