View Full Version : MMI repeatedly crashing

Hi all,

I have had a good search on the forum and tried Google to no avail so I'm just trying a quick post on the off chance that someone might be able to give me a pointer.

I have the base MMI (RMC?), two SD card slots and no sim, on a pre FL 2011 C7.

I've had no issues until this weekend when I tried to start the sat navigation and, when selecting the destination, the MMI switched off and back on again. I tried a few times with the same result so gave up, put the radio on and set off back from York to Manchester.

Half way home the MMI began repeatedly crashing and restarting. I pulled over unpaired my phone from the Bluetooth and tried the three button reset. No change. So I then reset the MMI system settings to factory defaults.

I can now switch the MMI on manually and after approximately one minute it shuts down and stays off. During that one minute of activity it seems to work, display, radio etc, although it is never on for long enough to get a Bluetooth connection.

I'm guessing that perhaps the BT module has broken, but my fear is that it might need a completely new MMI system.

I haven't had chance to book the car in to investigate further, but would appreciate and tips off anyone who has experienced similar.

Regards
John

The BT module it part of the main MMI RMC module. You need to get the car scanned with diagnostic software like VCDS, and see if it brings up any error codes. However it does sound like a faulty RMC module.

One point to note, you can get RMC units off ebay for a few hundred pounds, however they will need to get component protection removed which and be done via a limited number of specialist or any Audi dealer

Thanks for the reply and heads-up on the RMC module. I'll get the diagnostics done asap. I suspect an independent will be more accommodating on fitting an eBay sourced unit than a main dealer.

Yes but the issue is finding an independent that has a licenced version of ODIS with access to VW database.

Just to round-up, in my case the MMI glitch was identified as being Optical bus failure. The SD card with the sat nav maps couldn't be read. On taking the SD card out, the MMI behaved itself. So it was either caused by a corrupted SD card or SD reader. I guess I'll find out when I get replacement maps, but I'll wait until April for the 2017 version before paying out £220+.
