I've recently bought a 2001 Passat TDI 130 Sport supposidly for the misses ;) but i like it so much she's not having it it's all mine i'm like a child with a new toy,it's my first V/W and i could kick myself for waisting all the money on other make cars i've spent over the years.I can't see myself changing from V/W with what i've seen so far.The car has done 108,000 miles and it had the timing belt changed at 60,000 so it's almost due to be done again.I nearly collapsed the other day when i phoned my local V/W garage up to see how much it cost to get done and they quoted me £370.The only thing that i'm a bit worried about is i've just had the car remapped and i'm told it is now producing around 183 bhp the difference is amazing to what it was like before i had it done ,don't get me wrong i was impressed with it before but there is a huge difference in the power now i'm just worried incase the V/W garage does something whilst they are changing the belt that makes the car go back to what it was like before.Does anyone know if they have any need to plug it into the computer or is it just a case of old belt off new one on and thats it.The guys that did the remap for me told me that it is untraceable the only way you could tell is if you drove the car,or is it quite a straight forward job that any garage could do or is it the safest bet by taking it to a V/W Garage just so i get the V/W stamp.I think i saw something that the front of the car has to come of to change the belt but that sounds a bit drastic to me maybe thats why its so dear or should i tell the garage that the cars been remapped or does anyone on this forum do timing belts :biglaugh: .Any advice would be appreciated

replacing the belt is not difficult and is only a mechanical job so they will not alter our remapping unless possibly you have it serviced at th esame time when they will scan it too. The belt kit costs around £100 from non dealers and you need a couple of threaded rods to support the front panel of the car - not that drastic. Depending upon your engine type you also need a locking tool for the engine (mine was £10 from GSF) and possibly one for the cam although on my engine it is only a 6mm drill bit. My friendly local mechanic has the specialist tools and offered to loan them to me as well - so might be worth a try.

I was considering getting mine remapped (ATJ/115HP) to see what difference it makes and to MPG as well
