I've currently got a '54 reg seat toledo SE 1.9tdi 130... it's done 180k has a flashing coil and engine management light, but still goes strong and gives me an average 50mpg...

Problem is, I really like the look of a few '54 reg A4 2.5 tdi quattro 's. ...

I do mostly motorway miles (600-900 week) in all conditions, so extra grip at 5am roads would be good. But how bad are they really mpg wise?

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

why not get the seat plugged in and find the cause of the warning lights.. at least then its worth something if you do sell it ?

I will be when I get 5mins. I'm putting money on having to change at least one injector..
(Coil light only comes on when the lights are on. So changed the bulbs but still happens)

why do you think you need an injector ? why would the coil light have anything to do with the lights other than the brake lights ?

Just the way the car behaves under acceleration etc. I've had a few cars and had similar problems... most ford's I found it cheaper to scrap them rather than replace. Vag lumps seem a different story.

As for lights, just something I read online (I did have a bulb out too). And the fault only occurs when the lights are on...

ok, injectors very rarely go wrong on these engines, but the injector loom does fail. 100 notes sees that sorted if it is. a fault code read would confirm. you need to get it on a computer. its not a ford, its a vw, 2 totally different things. one built properly and the other built to a very cheap budget.
yes the a4 2.5 is a wonderful car, very nice to drive.. mpg is not all that good though, certainly no where near what the pd can get.

Cheers. I appreciate that!

Yeah I've noticed the difference...

...I've seen the a4 2.5 tdi advertised as getting 65mpg on autotrader. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170219/a379093695113f72f6fb8660f704dfb0.jpg

65.7 mpg is fiction .

Coil light on when lights are on? could be the brake light switch - a quick and cheap change. EML could just be sticking egr valve, worth investigating both faults rather than chuck the car away for pennies.

What sort of mpg could I expect from a 2.5tdi if driven sensibly or possibly remapped....there beautiful cars

I wouldn't put any serious money into a non EU6 TDI now with the Toxicity zones which will be all over the UK in less than three years. I can see an absolute collapse in the value of non EU6 diesels vehicles in the next 18 months when people finally stop living in denial.

I wouldn't worry Zolly, it is only being introduced in civilized countries, not Wales... :outtahere

No value collapse for me , my Euro 3 is only worth £2.50 .

And more reliable than a Euro 6 !

Well... the flashing coil light, turned out to be a faulty bulb.

Took it to a local garage who plugged it in... ran a few tests under the bonnet... and told me that the turbo was Underboosting and was basicly stuffed!

Didn't charge me a penny! Said he could fit a new turbo but would be looking at around £500 labour and said I'd need a kkk turbo... then added that if I took it off and just cleaned it. It would probably work fine. (Just he didn't do that.)

So I've been looking at trying out the Mr muscle clean... any advice?

mr muscle is a short term solution . some people use it successfully, but it can do more harm than good and cannot get into the places it needs to. and 500 labour, he really doesnt want to do the job, does he . 4 hours would see it off and back on again..

He may not have wanted the job. But he didn't charge me for any of the diagnostics and that's normally £60 alone round here, without them popping the bonnet.

Even with only 4 hours labour and the cost of a turbo... I only paid £700 for the car 6 months ago and just got it past the 180k mark. (And the gearbox goes a little clunky all of a sudden...)

I like the toledo because it's rarer.. hardly see any on the roads... its comfy and keeps on going... the unfortunate reality it's knackered.
If I Mr muscle it and it works, great! If it doesn't. ...well it's still knackerd

:)

So... update time...

Had a puncture... jacked up the car... blah blah blah... just doing up the spare and some idiot bumps into my car and drops it off the jack. (Yes. Should have used axel stands)... anyway... now it's working! Boosting like a trooper. No limp mode and back to being a nippy lil motor.

Must have been a stuck impeller?

I went from 90,000 miles to 230,000 in my 2.5 TDi cabriolet, normally 45+ to the gallon if easy on the throttle & keep the oil fresh. Cruise control helped, another 2 mpg, well worth it & not too bad to fit aftermarket, just had to get the thing coded to car at a *******

Depends how you drive it, I had 45+ out of mine, cruise control helps on long distance travel, had a tuning box too :)
