View Full Version : Golf GT TDI 2.0 Crank, no start issue

Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help with this head scratcher! Golf has suddenly decided it doesn't want to start. I drove to the shops the other day and on return to the car, it was just cranking but not starting. After 3 or 4 mins I managed to get it started and got home without issue but it wouldn't start after parking up. In the evening, I managed to get it started first time and drove away, only for the car to judder and splutter to a halt 100yds down the road. Again, it cranked but would not start. After another 5 mins trying, i managed to get it started (with the throttle fully pressed down) and whizzed back home.

Since then, I've barely been able to get it started. It now only cranks, and on the rare occasions it does fire up, it cuts out after 2 or 3 seconds.

I've done a full scan with VCDS and did have a fault for engine speed sensor (G28). I cleared this fault and it hasn't flagged back up so i'm wondering if that was potentially a symptom of something else? I've got the part on order but any other suggestions in the meantime would be much appreciated! The tachometer was initially moving when trying to start but barely moves now.

Other points:

The fuel pump is priming and fuel is reaching the filter at least
I've tried both keys (in-case immobiliser issue)
Inspected Cam belt and don't see any damage/missing teeth
Battery 6 months old and fully charged

VCDS log below - ABS and steering angle faults due to me unplugging battery so not concerned about them

Looks like a faulty crank sensor. Really crap to change. Recommend paying some poor bugger to change it. Have seen a few with wiring faults where the wiring has rubbed through around the gearbox. Wouldn't recommend fitting a cheap sensor either.

Thanks for the reply! Now pretty certain it is the sensor - registering no engine speed on cranking when monitoring with VCDS - also now showing MIL on for the sensor in the error log.

Is it many hours work for a garage to change? I only need the car for another month before travelling for 6 months so i'm trying to avoid any big expenses as want to change her when i get back

Thanks again

Best way to change it is remove the charge air pipe and oil filter /oil cooler housing. Then access is reasonable. I reckon 2 or 3 hour's labour.

So after 4 weeks and a lot of money spent - i'm still no where closer and would really appreciate any further suggestions! Here is what I have done so far with no joy

-New Crank sensor
-New Cam sensor
-Tested Replacement ECU
-Replacement fuel filter
-Removed injector wiring loom, cleaned and checked for continuity at all points

Fuel pump is definitely priming and reaching the filter - could a tandem pump fault cause a no start? The engine feels like it almost catches but not quite.

Thanks in advance!

I would of stopped after the new crank sensor. Any new fault code's? It's always hard to diagnose faults like this over the Internet. Could be broken wiring in the loom from g28. Pin 1 should be live to the sensor pin 3 is earth pin 2 is sensor voltage back to the ecu. Ideally check these at the ecu plugs and for continuity from the pin side back to the g28 plug. You don't want any more than 9 ohms in any of the wires. Another thing it could be is an injector. If one goes down it won't start. I would take the cover off and check resistance at the terminals of each injector and then check from each terminal individuly to the body of the injector if you get a reading here then you have found it. ...or an easier way to rule them out is disconnect no1 injector wiring plug at the injector then try and start it. ..if no joy then connect no1 back up and disconnect no2 injector no joy then re connect and repeat process for no3 and no4 .

Unfortunately, I failed with the crank sensor job despite getting to a point where I could see it (bolt rusted and didn't want to round it out) so had to tow it to a garage. After changing crank sensor with no luck they did some scans and had both crank and cam sensor error so suggested engine timing hence the cam sensor (and a new belt but that's another story!!) . They did get it running after a bit of cranking and thought that was problem solved but back to square one when I went to collect and it wouldn't start. They had an electrical engineer look at it and he suggested loom or ECU.

Wish I had stopped at crank sensor! Will test the injectors as described - appreciate it's a tricky one to diagnose so am grateful for the suggestions!

Injectors don't always show a fault and you can try it at no cost.

Thanks for the advice! I'm going to be parking up the car for 5 months now and will revisit the troubleshooting when I get back - will be sure to try the injectors and advise of the solution! Cheers

Not that you'll be looking at it for a while now, but check intake throttle flap V157 ( just upstream of EGR valve) is open when trying to start, easy to check if you drop the intake pipe off and hold a mirror under the throttle housing. I had one fail on my 1.9. didn't throw up a fault code but eventually failed in closed position.

Hi I'm having this cranking / startup issue on a Golf GT TDI 57 reg 170 Bhp which has a BMN engine with DSG gearbox
VCDS throws the code below.

Sometimes the car starts and drives okay others it has to be cranked 2 or three times before it starts. As of late the car also stops and then has problems starting and you have to wait a few mins and then try and start it. It is usually okay after that.

The crank sensor was changed along with the transmission side seal / ring from Eurocarparts. The car would not start at all. So a sensor was purchased from the dealers and changed.

Though the car is starting we still keep having issues with car taking extended crank time or stopping when being driven.

What has been replaced so far

Crank Sensor
Transmission side seal / ring
Fuel pump in tank which was not sending fuel through when sensor was changed
Fuel Filter and the mechanism on top of filter this also seemed to be getting fuel in but not sending it out.

The garage did notice that the wiring coming from the crank sensor had been cut and then wired back towards the ECU.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Reading the data that you posted , it says rpm 128 , it will never start unless it see's a minimum of 280 rpm. So why would that be? Have you tried charging the battery? Cold cranking amps is everything these day's.
