Hi All,

Used this forum alot to help me with various things here and there but now I have become very stuck and need some advice/help!

I have a 2002 Fabia SDi - It has a few problems:

Rough running when started
Blows out loads of smoke when driving along

It has been like this since I purchased it. I have run a few tests on VAG-Com (attached) which leave me a little puzzled.

I'm going to start with changing the Fuel filter, T-Piece and giving it a good service but the test leave me thinking that its either the injectors are gone or the timing is out.

Any help at all appreciated!

try unplugging your MAF sensor and going for a run.
Sorry just realised it's SDi , don't think they have a MAF sensor. Check for air getting into the fuel at the filter connections, worn camshaft, I think pump timing looked ok on VCDS, consider a compression and injector test once you've exhausted the easy cheap options. Possibly fuel pump fault which could be expensive. how many miles has it done?

What are the binary values in fields 2 and 4 of group 017?

Hi Rob 69 - I don't think my SDi has a MAF but i will double check and try if it does.

Hi Crasher, I did not read that value, I will tonight when I get back after the drive home. Are there any other groups I should get data from to help?

Thanks!

The groups with useful data are

Ignition on engine NOT running

006 block 2

007 block 1

019 blocks 1 & 2

At idle

000 blocks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 & 9

001 blocks 1 > 4

002 blocks 2 & 3

003 block 4

004 blocks 2 > 4

013 blocks 1 > 4

016 blocks 2 > 4

WOT, hot in 3rd or 4th gear @ 3K rpm

000 1 > 4 & 6 > 9

004 2 > 4

008 2 >4

Crasher, hope I have done this right!

Pic 1 - Ignition on 006/007/019

Pic 2 - At idle cold 000/001/002
Pic 3 - At idle cold 003/004/013
Pic 4 - At idle cold 016

Pic 5 - At idle warm 000/001/002
Pic 6 - At idle warm 003/004/013
Pic 7 - At idle warm 016

Pic 8 - 3000rpm of there about in 4th gear - 001/004/008

Also, log of 001/004/008 whilst driving home, the beginning of the drive was fine, then lots of smoke!

Pic 6/7/8 - log won't upload here.

Ok, I'm going out on a guess here, however reading around and looking at all the logs it looks to me that the timing is out due to an incorrectly fitted cambelt?

I don't like what injector 4 is doing and 004/3 is way out under load so yes, COI and valve timing.

So, just to sum this up,

COI (what is COI short for? *Commencement of Injection*) and valve timing - Get the cambelt done and the timing adjusted correctly (It's due a change in 2017 so may as well get it done now!)

Injector 4 - Keep tabs on this after a belt change and see what happens - maybe replace?

Yes COI is the pump timing.

Great stuff, It's booked in for the cambelt, and I will advise them that this needs adjusting as part of the replacement. I will update this on Wednesday with an outcome and check injector 4 again. Thanks for your help Crasher!

*UPDATE*

Got the cambelt done and it is running a lot better, not as much smoke now but still some when I accelerate.

Having a quick look it looks like injector 4 is gone! I have attached a couple of screenshots of Group 013 and 004

I take it the next course of action is new injector.

Possible, you could move it to 1 or 2 and see if the problem moved.

Good call, worth a shot.

Any advice on removing the injector? I have never worked on an SDi injector, all I know is you need to replace the seal. Having a look at some workshop manuals it looks like the suggest using a special puller?

It should come out, you are supposed to renew the seals but for a quick test.

Great, so it would be - Clean area - disconnect fuel pipe from injector - undo pide at pump side and lift it back - pull said injector out of the hole and swap.

Will give that a bash over Christmas! :D

I use special nylon an brass brushes for bores and mounting surfaces like this which must not marr the surface and gently soft wire wheel polish the seat face of an injector being re-used (NOT the pintle) and to reuse a copper washer anneal it with some heat and when cool, polish off on some 1000 grit on a grade 2 flat bed. Keeping grit out of the bores is imperative and a compression test glow plug adapter with some air pressure in there keeps the crap blowing into your face instead of into the bores.

*UPDATE*

Tried swapping injectors 1/2 with 4 - and also put a shiny new one in 4 /2/1 and I ALWAYS get the same result - injector 4 1.88!! :aargh4: what does that mean??

Check the compression....

Ok, Will have to take it to the garage for this, I don't have the tools to do a proper test on it.

I guess, this is pointing to piston rings or bent valves? I'm going more piston rings due to I have noticed I'm losing some oil now!

Crasher

It could be a compression ring problem but it certainly not a common problem, my guess is the cam belt was timing screwed up and it has bent a valve. Any decent garage should have a diesel compression tester and the M10x1 adapter for the glow plug hole. Once removed, I don't recommend reusing glow plugs, they can easily snap and ruin your day.

Ok, this makes sense especially as the timing was out it could have caused a fair bit of damage.

In you opinion would it be worth fixing it all, jibbing a new (used) engine in or just cutting my losses and moving on with the cost of labour etc.

Crasher

Finding a good used engine will be difficult, get a compression test done first.
