Today I decided to see if taking the Vac pipe off the EGR valve on the right side of the engine facing it would do any good, I cut the pipe pushed a suitable diameter piece of metal rod up the pipe and pushed the other bit of pipe over the end so effectively blocking the pipe, pushed the Vac pipe back on the EGR valve looks like it should, and tried it, had to do a 60 mile motorway drive all I can say is great, no EML and the car responded a lot crisper, checked as far as I could that the EGR was actually closed with a torch seems to be.

Give it a few more days and eml will come on as it's a Euro 4.

I've just got a Touareg 2.5 tdi and did this straight away. No light yet and slight improvement.

From personal experience, no EML or codes will show on the BAC engine with the vacuum controlled EGR valve.... the later BPE with motorised versions will though.

It's not a case of vacuum operated or not , it's ALL cars built 2003 onwards that by law had to have ecu software to flag up an eml if the egr was impaired .

Fair enough if no eml comes up , one less job ...

As you say one less thing to worry about. I didn't mean to suggest it was a reason, just an observation that on a 2.5 Touareg one will flag a fault and the other won't.

I don't know about 'law', clearly there must be exceptions, 2.5 Touareg and Freelander 1 td4 being 2 post 2003 vehicles that I've owned and ran with egr cleaned and disabled. Definitely no eml or fault code on either in 3 years of ownership of each.

I'm going to try blanking my EGR on my 2.5tdi BDG. I have ordered a blanking plate from ebay, once I have fitted the plate should I also bung up the vacuum hose or should I leave it as it is just with the blanking plate?
With any luck it might help my running issues. Currently getting 17mpg on a motorway run so something is not right somewhere!
