Hello all,

I recently purchased a beautiful 2009 A4 Avant Quattro Auto (S-Tron) 3.0 TDI, FASH and only 53K miles.

The last family who owned the vehicle used this as a spare family car and hardly drove her, hence their reason for sale (and possible an answer to my query).

I have done my fair bit of 'Audi A4 3.0 tdi MPG' google searches and I have decided to post as I am now a little concerned.

My mpg expectations are not high, however I am seeing an average return of 23 MPG from 2 full tanks of petrol.
This driving has mainly been trips of about 10 miles with light to medium traffic.

Since my last full tank refuel I have travelled only 32 miles, and my needle is showing 3/4 full...

I have not carried out a full inspection on the engine bay yet, but I am not getting any unusual smells in the cabin.

Anyone have any ideas, is this MPG normal??

Many thanks

It's a bit low but you are using it in winter for short trips where the engine isn't getting a chance to warm up.

I have had from new a3.0 TDI 245bhp stronic Quattro avant. Just 4 years old now with 13k on clock. On a 50 mile "A road" run it does about 45mpg. On motorway at 70mph it does about 46 mpg. I once did 100 miles on motorway and kept it at about 55 mph (boring as hell but just a test) this gave 61mpg. On mixed driving bit of town bit A road I get about 36mpg. These are computer readings that are about 7% more optimistic than actual. But even so, all in all, pretty good
i also have a 2.0 TDI A4177 bhp Quattro manual. This smaller engine is awful. It returns about 29mpg for the equivalent 36mpg above. It is truely heavy on fuel, though Audi seem to think it is quite acceptable. For me I think there is a wide variation from car to car and it is pot luck which one you get. My A6 is really good, my A4 is terrible. Despite the A6 being heavier, loads faster and s tronic it is much better on fuel. Seems to defy the laws of physics!!
hope this helps

Hello guys,

Thanks for the posts.

I agree with the engine not being warm on relatively short trips, but it is still rather low - I will take the car on a long run at some point and see what I am getting then.

The MPG you are getting on your A6 3.0 sounds very reasonable and really puts my issue in perspective!

Any other 3.0 tdi owners who can help?
Cheers

My A6 biturbo averaged 39 mpg over 50,000 miles. That is exact mpg not from the DIS as I have tracked the fills from day 1. Bear in mind I never used it for short journeys- my commute is 25 miles and about 40 minutes and about half my mileage was motorway journeys. On long trips it would easily get over 40mpg. Best I got was 45 on one journey but round town it was pretty poor.
My wife had an A4 avant with the 2.0 tdi ultra engine and it only managed 43 mpg average which I thought was poor.

Cheers Scott,

I must have read a post of yours previous to mine.
Your mpg is nice

I would expect you to get at least the same mpg (albeit the tiptronic has 8 gears which must help). Once you get a figure from a decent run you can take it from there. I know the s tronic / tiptronic is heavy on fuel round town in these cars but once you get going they are pretty frugal!
My S3 is good for the power but don't think I could get over 30mpg. My old A6 C5 avant was lucky to get 25 but things have moved on a lot.
