Hi all. I bought a nice Mk3 GTi 8 Valve yesterday and so have joined your fotum. My first question is: at what age or mileage should the timing belt be changed? My car's got virtually a ful VAG history but i can find no mention of it having been changed...

Its normally around 60k.. however the service book will say about 80k if i rember right..

If you are unsure when it was last done.. have a look into getting it done asap.. then you know are safe for another 60k!

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the advice. I've now changed it, quite a straightforward job on these which is nice. According to Haynes, VW specify a 1st examination at 60k then every 20k until they decide it needs changing. No time dependency though which is a bit worrying!
