How do I get hold of comprehensive wiring diagrams for my Golf MkIII?

The ones in the Haynes manual only cover a fraction of the system.

The specific area of the electrical system I am interested in is the ECU and the rev counter

I am trying to track down the intermittent fault many others appear to have of occasional engine cut out and having to wait 15 - 50 mins for it to restart when it has been left to cool for 15 mins.

We're doing this topic over here:

I'm waiting for a 'Engine Speed Sensor' from Murry's store on fleabay (£40). Thats said to be one of the reasons for the cutting out?

Murry's site:

If it is an ADY or AGG engine then I would suggest a fault code read and that will probably show an engine speed sensor code as SneakyMcC says. I have the ADY/AGG diagram at work on paper so I could scan it for you.

Thanks

It is an ABD engine - is the wiring likely to be that different?

I want to trace the wiring from the rev counter to see whether and how this links to the ECU as I suspect that is where the problem lies

If it's no hassle I would be interested in seeing any golf circuit diagrams that may help as at present I have nothing.

ABD different from an ADY/AGG? Somewhat! What year is the car? What is your e-mail?

Thanks. I have a Haynes manual, but you weren't impressed wi'that were you. I figured that an hours labour will cost more than the £40 for a new'un so I tht I'd confirm it weren't that. My Golf has had this item replaced already. We've only just bought the car and looks like I bought a duffer! http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/BBS/images/smiles/shooting_smilie2.gif

My local scrapper has a MkIII that I have already had the coil off - I may as well see if it still has the engine sensor and give that a try as well. It is a pretty cheap way of taking parts off the suspect list.

sounds like voltage regulator faulty check charge rate from D+61 TERMINAL at the alternator and at the dash. There may also be a volt drop at the ecu causing ignition to malfuction, you could check voltage at the ecu as well(these are suggestions)or even engine earth poor

I have an old Etka system. I'll have a look on there for you later.

By the way. I edited a earlier post, above with some links in case they're of use?

The most common reason for this type of cutting out on these engines is the Hall sender in the distributor so a new distributor is required. To set the ignition timing the ECU has to be put into basic adjustment mode 000 using something like VAG-COM. I would strongly recommend NOT using a second hand distributor as this is such a common problem you may just fit another faulty unit. A new VW unit is 0303 905 237AX and costs £96.35 from a VW dealer exchange. It comes complete with a cap and rotor. Aftermarket recon units are not much cheaper and are inferior and don’t come with a two year guarantee. The hall sender is available from VW under the part number 030 905 065 B but I would still recommend the complete distributor. Aftermarket the hall sender is available from Bosch under part number 1 237 011 124 and also from Facet, Standard and Topran.

:moon:Me thinks crasher you spend to much time reading part numbers or even etka

Far too much time.

Download the Vag-Com program and buy a cable from ebay (£15), hook laptop up to car with cable, run Vag-Com.. and in a few mins you will know about any electronic fault's, be it a sensor gone or a short in a wire.. cheaper and quicker than replacing parts one by one and hopeing for the best, best £15 i ever spent; worst was the Haynes manual, download Elsawin instead, has everything you could need in it.

P.S. Vag-Com always shows the error "Hall sender - no signal" due to the engine being switched off (but ignition on) duing the scan and the scan takes more than 6 seconds to start (the time you have after switching the engine off and the Hall sender signal stoping) so don't assume if you get this fault code that you need a new distributor, test the Hall sender with a multi 1st..

Oh and Bosch make these parts for VW, along with most other sensors in the VW golfs engine, so if you do need one go to GSF and get a Bosch one for around £45

Not on a Simos system.

Well according to the VW ElsaWin program the ECU will always report this 6 seconds after engine is stoped... regardless of what software you use to read the ECU.. mine reports its fine.. only saying what VW say thmselves

Are you looking at 2E or ADY?

Adz

ADZ! That a 90PS single point 1.8. It was an 1.4 ABD engine anyway-could have sworn it was a GTI!!!
