A1 steering rack

Please help, my Audi A1 is only 4 and a half years old but I've been told by my local mechanic that the steering rack needs replacing. Is this correct that a steering rack can need replacing due to wear and tear after only four and a half years, are Audi not liable to replace this...I'd expect to replace it at 10 years but not yet.
Any advice much appreciated.

welcome. i would maybe get a second opinion preferably by a main dealer as it sounds like you dont trust this mechanic. if it does need replacing then it is un common but not unheard of and no, audi wont be liable although they may offer some goodwill if you have been loyal to them, but the warranty is 3 years and thats when their liability ends.
