Hi,

I'm looking for confirmation as to whether I would be able to use a slightly different tyre size on my vehicle during the winter months...

My car currently has the standard 205/55/R16 rims and tyres on and the scenario is as follows:

A friend of mine is selling a set of alloys off of a T5 transporter that are 215/65/R16, the tyres upon which are scrubbed and need replacing.

If i were therefore to fit some 215/55/R16 winter tyres to these rims, firstly can that be done and secondly would I then be able to use them on my vehicle?

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Regards,

Ryan

Welcome to VWAF :)

The tyres will fit, yes, the speedometer would be out though.

The wheels however, won't fit your Golf without adapters.

The T5 has a 5x120 PCD whereas the Golf has a 5x112.

in an ideal world winter tyres would be narrower than usual. look at snow tyres on rally cars, proper skinny to cut in to find grip. same in wet or icy conditions. wide tyres float on top. great in the dry. i run the narrowest option on my 80 which is a 195 but i use michelin cross climate all year round. a great tyre in all conditions and a lot easier than messing about with 2 sets of wheels.

I've got a set of 4 Leon "Performance" alloys fitted with Nokian WRD3 winter tyres. Size is 225/45/17, they're stamped 7J 17 112 ET49, and they went from the Leon straight onto my daughters Mk5 Golf GT Sport. Three are perfect, one has been slightly kerbed. All tyres have more than 6mm tread, two are actually still on 7mm.
I'm looking for £500. I live near Bedford, but I'm in Reading one day a week if that helps at all.
Here's a link to a full set of photos, and a couple shown below.
