View Full Version : A6 Avant 19" Tyre choice - Uniroyal Rainsport 3 or Kumho KU39 Ecsta Le Sport?

Hi,

Collecting my new car next weekend. A6 Avant S Line 62 plate and will be upgrading to 19" wheels from the factory 18s.

Just after some advice on the above 2 tyres.

Prices:

Uniroyal £99.95

Kuhmo's £89.80... From Camskills

I do mainly motorway driving with a 70mile daily roundtrip commute to work.

Obviously need to have good grip but also want them to have a good wear rate and not too noisy.

Or if there are any others you would recommend at this price point?

Cheers
Athers [emoji106]

Wow, how did he manage that? How many miles did the tyre cover before this happened?

He didn't do anything , others have experienced the same .

Kumho are off our list forever , he invested wisely in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 .

Get the Uniroyal Rainsport 3 .

Do they have rim protectors ?

19" isn't an upgrade , only one upshot - looks .

Loss of mpg , torque , bhp , handling , ride comfort and acceleration through increased unsprung mass .

More expensive tyres and where tyre and alloy damage issues are caused as 19"+ start to disagree with our less than perfect roads .

Sorry, upgrade wrong word 'change to 19s'. Purely personal preference, I know everyone is different regarding size of wheels, but let's get back to the tyre subject.

Both have rim protection but need to find out how much.

Goodyear F1 3s also on my shortlist.

You have scared me off the Kumho's with that horror story as I have a 2year old and another one due next month, so their safety is paramount.

Some reviews of Rainsport say the sidewall is a bit soft which would worry me if used on a 2 tonne car.

I have the RainSport 3's on my 19's and they are doing the job just fine. I ran them on my previous A3 and they outlasted The other brands I tried (Goodyear, Vredestein, and Michelin)

they have good grip in all conditions, are quiet and comfortable. I run them at 40psi all round and my car has the S Line suspension and is way more comfortable than my A3 ever was running on 18's and S Line suspension

Soft sidewalls ?

Go XL .

The Kumho has one of the smallest and pointless rim protectors at 3.5mm .

Cheers mate, nice to hear from someone running them on the s line suspension and on 19s. How many miles have you got out of them so far and how much tread roughly remaining?

Yeah I know regardless of the tyre they need to be XL for this car. Don't worry, I've already ruled out the Kuhmo's. [emoji16]

Was just some user reviews of rainsport's online said they found the sidewall to be a bit soft and looked as if slightly flat still when done to recommend psi so they just over inflated them a bit to resolve this.

My last a6 had 19s with the good year f1 asymmetric and at 18k they still had about 5-6mm tread. This was mainly motorway miles on my 70 mile commute each way.
Got the michelins PS3 on the 272 and they seem to be wearing ok. About 5k and still got 6mm. The faster wear on Michelin could be to do with more power and 4wd.

What size tyres are you looking at for £99?
I run 19's on my speedline alloys ps3's cant find them for less than £200 ish. Unbranded around £150, but as above cheap tyres are not upto the task for a6 quattros
Think mine are 245/35/19

Done approx 7500 miles and I'd say i still have over 6mm tread remaining all round. I reckon I should get 15k out them comfortably.

Michelins are about £180-200 each and that's dealers prices. Had 3 punctures in 6 months all the same wheel/tyre. Lucky I had the wheel tyre insurance.
The official size on the 19s is 255/40/19.

As I got in my car this morning I looked at my front tyre and thought to myself how well my RainSport 3's are lasting, I don't do a lot of miles but they are defintley lasting a lot longer than the RainSport 2 and are so much quieter.

Went to my local Malvern Tyres today to check out the Uniroyal Rainsport 3s. Very nice tyre with excellent rim protection. He's going to do me 4 fitted for £450. Thanks to all those who gave me some good advice on this thread. 👍

I have only ever bought Wolfrace wheels for my cars apart from a minor dalliance with Carrely in the 90's and they were the only 8x18 I could find which was listed as suitable for a Leon Cupra R to clear the Brembo's I had sitting ready.....only to find they would not clear the calipers.....!

Just to add my comments.. I've run my 2013 A6 245 quattro on Kumho tyres since the original factory fit set wore out. One of the reasons that I switched to them was the noise rating and they were noticeably quieter (and cheaper) than the original tyres. My car is an early Black Edition so is on 20" rotors. I have been very impressed with them and have replaced again with Kumho. I think I just paid £152 for a 255 x 35 x 20 although they are a few pounds cheaper on Black Circles. I do quite a lot of miles (currently on 72000) and would not hesitate to recommend them.

Thanks for your comment mate. Interesting to hear especially as you are running on 20s with the 35 profile and suffered no tears like someone reported is common with this tyre. How many miles did you get out of your 1st set?

I can't remember exactly but I think I got around 30000 out of a set but then most of what I do is on motorways. Rim protection is not good, both of my fronts have been kerbed.

I know you've already bought them but on my 3.0 tdi Quattro I have rainsport 3's on the front and eagle F1's on the rear.
Both XL.
Both very good quality with good grip levels. I'd say the F1's have more grip on the dry and a much bigger tyre protection. I was a little disappointed with the tyre protection on the rainsport 3's.
My next tyres will be F1's again however I would have no issues recommending either

For you folks in Birmingham and the West midlands .. Dudley etc. Try Jefferies Tyres in Bromsgrove. Their prices are super keen. Scruffy little place but decent customer service and you can get premium brands at great prices. I had a couple of sets of Michelins for my old C6 3.0 Tdi quattro from them and they were cheaper than the discount warehouse I am a member of when they had a 4 for 3 deal on...
When I replaced my allroad conti's the price difference compared to my local guys was only £15 or £20 for the set so not worth driving across there but they still had the best price.

Am not sure if it's available in 19's but the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 came out earlier this year, it's not the replacement to the PS3 but actually to the Pilot Super Sport.

Having got 25k out of the MPSS (would have been 30k excepting for a misalignment) I'll be definitely going for these.

What's more Kwik Fit (sorry to swear) have 25% off for Aug and Sept so fully fitted in my size (245/45/18) it comes out at £133 per tyre fitted which is circa £20 cheaper per corner than supply only at any known on-line tyre specialist (Camskill/Oponeo/Black Circle)

No experience of the RS3 but only the RS2 which was impressive in the wet but sadly had a very weak sidewall and I'd blown 2 when mounting curbs :(

Hi,

To be honest not read all replies (only quick visit to forum) but I run 19's on my S-Line and would recommend either Michelin Pilot Sports (had 2 and 3's both good) or the Goodyear Eagle Assy 3's I currently have. Can't really comment on the Eagles wear rate as too soon but Michy's were quiet, much better grip (massive improvement on turn in from the OEM Bridgestones it came with) and had good wear rates.

Kwikfit price is £160.50 inc fully fitted on a 255/35/19 :) So will save you £28 even if the blackcircles price includes fitting (which I suspect it doesn't)
