Will my 1.9 tdi fail an mot without a catalic converter. I know someone who will strip the insides of the cat and put it back on the car so it looks like it has a cat but it doesn't thanks.

The visual test is to check if a CC is present. Diesels are, AFAIK, only tested on smoke, not emissions*

Whether it passes or not is up to the tester.

*Edit - New rules came in in 2014, Search for "MOT Special Notice 1-2014 - Gov.uk"

On 16 February 2014 Section 7.1 of the inspection manual will be amended to include a check for the presence of catalysts and particulate filters on diesel powered vehicles. Any vehicle where a catalytic converter or particulate filter is missing where one was fitted as standard will fail the test.

You will be tested on the presence of catalysts. I retract my previous statement.

A gutted diesel cat will pass, unless they take it off and look through it....they wont do this.
