2016 Q7 Virtual Cockpit

Have just ordered a 2016 Q7 without the Virtual Cockpit. Have seen the Virtual Cockpit on ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/) for Q7. Does anyone know if this is just a "plug and play" changeover is there more involved?

Not sure re plug and play etc but make sure it's a working VC. I know there has been a couple of Qs where they've had to change the VC due to faults

I thought the same, however am guessing it may no longer be an option to amend spec if considering this route!

No it's $2300 (1550 euro) option here in Australia on the 160kw model.

Wow, it was only £600 in the UK I think. Strange it should be SO different in Australia.

Even so, I think for the sake of saving €500 (ish) once you have paid for shipping from Europe / Import Taxes / Fitting / Coding; I think I would go with the factory option to ensure it was all covered by warranty and I didn't invalidate warranty on anything else.

That is assuming it doesn't need dealer coding, which is a real possibility when even things like DAB tuners need dealer coding due to the component protection.

Too late now - pick it up this week....even with shipping and tax it is approx half what Audi charge for the option! Comes standard on the 200kw model here but not 160...

Good luck getting it fitted, I doubt it will be a straight plug and play. Hopefully something that can be coded with VCDS / Vag Tacho and doesn't need a code from the dealer

Personally I think I would have added the option for €1550, as opposed to pay nearly 2/3 of that for the part alone.

I would hold fire and see if you "really" need it. I think the standard dash is still good and has the graphical part between the dials. Unless there is a well documented upgrade path, you could sink a lot of money into this and not get the result you want.

No chance. It needs content protect removed, dealer coding, new module on the CAN gateway and MOST connections. It's not just plug and play sadly.

Different firmware from what I understand so may not be just coding.. Need to investigate that more.

Funny you ask that Nemo, I PM Andy few weeks ago about this. I have a photo of an SQ7 doing this also. I reckon it might be in the coding for new Q7 that have come out since the SQ7 went on sale. I bet it's a general activation. Andy was able to get lap timers working on VC and that was only for SQ7 cars. I think the graphic design for SQ7 was not out yet but I bet it's in the coding for new Q7s now.

My concern is the SQ7 VC is a different part number than a normal Q7 VC. This means the firmware behind the scenes is normally also "different".. but hey, could be wrong and if its just coding then thats a result.

Personally I prefer the two dials display, but if I was a betting man I'd say it'll be just coding.

Spent best part of 2 hours today scouring through the configuration for anything that may lean towards enabling this in Module 17 (Dash), sadly.. I couldn't find diddly squat... I'm leaning more towards the fact its different firmware altogether.

Can't prove it, but that is my gut feeling after looking around. I wont give up though..

emailed these guys in Russia who sell the Virtual cockpit upgrades - they advise it is a simple retrofit (just install VC) but then you need to take to dealer after installing to have the component protection removed....

Yep, looking at the connectors the pin outs are the same for vc and non vc. You just need component protection removed by a dealer once installed.

This may be a silly question but - if I buy a VC to retrofit from ebay and the seller is from a non English speaking country (eg Germany) will the VC display info in English once fitted?

Yeah it will. Languages see driven from the MMI unit in the glove box.

One more question pls mate. Will the odometer reading on the retrofitted VC be your existing reading or will it state the miles/km travelled from the original vehicle?

Honestly, I dont know for sure. My assumption would be it gets that info from the Engine Control Module (01) and the VC unit just displays the data.

If you look in the link showing the guy in Russia who has done it (link (https://www.drive2.ru/b/2956061/)) you can see the old non-VC unit on 394Km and then on the new one it says 392Km...

That doesnt quite add up obviously, but its close... (though you would think it was very accurate or the pictures on the site arent quite true?)

Sorry, cant add anything else, I just dont know.
