Basically whats the verdict on the 1.9 TDI 130 against the 1.8 Turbo 163 or 190 BHP models. I have never owned a DISEASEL before and in my opinion should only be fitted into tractors, vans and lorrys. Can anyone pursuade me towards either. ps the misses aint too interested in diesel!!! I only do about 9000 miles a year so economy isn't at the top of my list.

Remaps on a 130 can push you up to about 180hp and 300lb/ft torque. Check out the results link in my signature for the feedback from our last Remap day we held.

I like diesels, but never going to be as good as a Turbo's petrol.

The 1.8T 180hp can be mapped to 225ish

Thanks Mark

If you are not interested in economy at all, go for the petrol. I have a 1.9TDI Sport 130. I calculated the economy and it does 51mpg. It hasn't been chipped or anything mechanically (though it does have chrome mirrors and a spoiler that I have added). It is easily powerful enough in and around town, good at speed too. I would suggest you get an S4 (very pricey) or an A4 S-Line (much more reasonable), they look much more sporty. The 2.5 TDI's are very good, but to keep the women happy, they often have to get what they want!

should only be fitted into tractors, vans and lorrys. .
You could add to this: " and cars whose owners are interested in long engine life and reliability". But, hey, maybe your missus doesn't care about these details. I've owned both petrol and diesel cars and I would never go back to spark ignition.

Thanks for the feedback, are disese(el) engines more reliable than petrol then? My A4 1.8T sport has done 165K with no engine probs whatsoever, and my Audi 80 2 litre sport has done 187K, again with no probs at all, i have heard of audi 80 petrol engines doing well over 300K. How long does a massey furguson engine last for!!!!

My mate has done 198k in his 99 A6. He has had it from 50k. All he had done to it is a timing belt, turbo and an exhaust. Not bad considering he's had it years and done so many miles in it.

I totally agree, weather you have a diesel or a petrol if you look after it i.e warm up engine before booting it and do regular oil changes i am sure 500K is not out of the question. Does anyone know of some moon mileage Audis that are still on original engines? Ok, so it sounds like a 1.9 TDI is the sensible option, but i think i am not sensible (ex suzuki RG500 nutter and road racer!) Guess its the 190BHP S-LINE for me then!!

Previous car I had was a 2.5L v6 MG sports saloon and that drank fuel - lucky to get 30 round town and not much more om m-way. It was quick but cost so much to run...tax, insurance and fuel. I changed to a 2.0TDi about 18 months ago and within 1st year worked out I had saved about £700 on fuel alone, plus about £100 on car tax and almost the same on insurance.
Around town I ger 40-45mpg and m-way high 50's!
For a quicker Diesel the 140BHP can be tuned to about 180 but you can get a 170 model now. Just my 2p worth.

Perhaps I've been a bit dismissive of petrol engines, looking at the above comments. Audis do seem to fare better than some of the other marques I have owned. Typical problems I have experienced are:

- disintegrating spark plugs, plus frequent need to clean, check and replace.

- HT leads breaking down

- HT coils breaking down

- starting problems in cold/damp weather

In fact, anything to do with HT electrics, which diesels don't have.

I'd never have another petrol I prefer the way diesels drive.

I forgot to mention, about the story of my mates Audi on the previous page, that was a 1.9TDI.
