Dashboard illumination

My Passat 1.9 TDI 2002 has automatic driving lights. However, to get any illumination in my dashboard I have to set the light switch to on.

In my Haynes Manual I can see that all instrument and control illumination is fed from the Convenience Unit, and that leads me to think that it may be possible to reprogram the instrument illumination to follow the ignition rather than the light switch.

Any ideas anyone?

The lighting feed for the dash (grey/blue wire) comes from component E20, Switches and instruments, lighting control, i.e. the dimmer switch.

I have obviously misread the diagrams. What I can do is just to move the Grey feed to the lighting rheostat from the lighting switch to a point fed from the ignition switch. Will give it a try
