View Full Version : Q7 > sq7

So crazy as this may sound I've reached out to my dealer to trade in (up?) my 3 month old Q7 for an SQ7.

Its all hypothetical right now and no decisions made, but I'm trying to work out if its worth doing. My current car is on PCP over 4 years and I feel I got a pretty good deal.

If I went for a newer (MY17 etc) Q7 then the numbers wont really work as the residual value of a new Q7 over 3/4 years doesn't stack up, but as (apparently) the residual value of an SQ7 are/will be. (Again, not sure how they know this so early on in its release) Then it looks like the numbers are more appealing

I can basically keep my monthly payments the same as I'm paying now for my current Q7 but obviously I need to dump down another deposit, not as high as my initial deposit on my current Q7 but another deposit regardless.

I'm trying to figure if all this is worth it for a factory order SQ7 or if I should just sit tight, enjoy the car I have (which don't get me wrong, I love) for a couple of years, but I would consider a Gen1 version (missing a few bits in newer ver's as we have all talked about in other threads) and look into it later when perhaps some "used" SQ7's will be lying about on forecourts?

I'm trying to weigh up my options and if this is a good idea or not. Would appreciate any insight my fellow owners or owners to be have

Cheers

Andy

I didn't realise it was so easy to cut short or change a PCP contract so early. To be honest I've never purchased that way before. Seems a shame after all of the work you have done to your current one to get out of it so early, saying that I assume you'd be Nov / Dec delivery of the SQ7.

This all said, DO IT!!!!!!!

After playing around with the configurator, the thought did cross my mind too! However, I'd not what to give up any of the options I've gone for and when you look at it, I've already taken a £48k car up to £70k and to go to the SQ7 (I'd have to have the driving dynamics pack!), it then becomes a £90k car. How big is that second deposit :D.

Since owning the Q7, I've found I drive slower as it's just more a more relaxing place to be. Especially not being bounced around off every bump and not having the kids complain they feel sick (every trip > 30 mins in the X5!). When I have called on the engine, it doesn't fall short and sounds really good too.

That said, if my numbers come up tonight, I WILL have one just like that picture!! (Daytona grey on 22").

Im in a slightly different position as I bought my q7 outright but I did toy with a similar idea to upgrade to an sq7 and use pcp (because psychologically I could not dump 70k on a car in one go). However once I crunched all the numbers I came back to the same old conclusion that every time i swap I'm going to lose money. The dealer always wins. I looked at an sq7 over 3 years on pcp it would cost me £40k in real money and I wouldn't own anything at the end of it. Decided to keep my q7 and hopefully if it's still worth 30-35k in a couple of years it's only really cost me about £17k over the time I've had it.
Whilst I also love the idea of the sq7 it does seem a little over engineered and I would be concerned that there's an awful lot more that could go wrong with it I suppose. Also for that kind of money I think I may be swayed to look at range rovers.
All that being said depends on how badly you want one.

Andy - it's not crazy...I would do so as well, but at the moment, sit tight and see if there are any gremlins in the initial SQ7s

I'm the same, I always buy outright, I really don't like the idea of not owning anything after a large amount paid. I do understand that pretty much all new cars are bought that way and it works out better for lots of people so you have the flexibility of chopping the car in more frequently.

This said again Andy, DO IT !!!!! Ha ha.

My last Q gen1 after 3yr
Residual appx 23k after 3yr (sold private @3yr for healthy equity)

Q7 mk11 after 3yr (Will be MY17)
Residual 31.k (10kmiles py) - will be screwed on any equity on 3yrs

Not seeing how much better SQ7 would stack up Though on Residual..

& not getting how ☝ Q7 gen.2 MY16 would fair better Residually?? compared to MY17..?

a bit slow 🐌 at times I guess.. ;-0

Like you said still new grounds and to cover sit it out till on the forcourt me thinks too

Had this land in feedly this morning by coincidence: Audi SQ7 2016 Review - motoring.com.au (http://www.motoring.com.au/audi-sq7-2016-review-102333/)

It's that car. It must be a sign that we should all order one...

It's WW3 next year apparently so there's no need to save anyway.

I had the option of transferring my deposit to an SQ7 (still do), dealer said they would have no problems shifting my original order as it was a well specced car at ~ £65k RRP, costing me £58,700 ish after discount.

If I went for an SQ7, it would no doubt end up at £80K RRP, and I am not sure they would give me the same discount (unless you can get it on carwow etc); so it is a big jump up in cash which I can afford (am buying the Q7 from savings), but I just think £80k on a car is a LOT of money (I was originally budgeting £50k ... oops) for a car that is for carrying the family around in a bit of luxury.

In the end I decided to keep the 272 Q7 and use £5k of what I "saved" not upgrading to the SQ7 to top up the insurance money from the stolen S4 to buy an RS3. So if I want something quick, I will take the RS3, long run with the family - the Q7. We need two cars, if we only needed one then I'd have gone with the SQ7.

Another key factor for me is that I'd be looking at October delivery instead of July/August and the baby (child #3 - the reason we started looking for a bigger car in the first place)
I due on August 5th and without the bigger car we are going to have to squeeze three car seats in the back of the RS3.

I know cars always take a massive hit in year 1...having seen all the paperwork for my swap bear in mind from list to buy back price (from BCA) it lost £18k

Closed to £15k with price it was back on the Used Car market at.

That's a heavy hit in my book

Elrao - some good points there. Now got me thinking that the more "sensible" option would be convincing the wife to trade in the X1 for an S3 or RS3!

Hey Guys

Thanks for all your comments and feedback, its appreciated. I've been mulling it over this morning and the more I think about it I'm not convinced its the right thing to do. Your right, at the end of the day its like a casino, the house always wins.

The spec the dealer did for me on an SQ7 (factory) with the same spec on my current Q7 bought it to £83K which is a pretty heavy price tag, at least it is for me.

I've paid £1500 for my ABT AEC Engine thing which now its been a month or so installed and I'm really happy with, I've had it wrapped, im looking at running boards and its a pretty high spec even for an MY16 version.

your not really paying "off" a car until year 2/3 on a 4 year PCP anyway so there is neg eq that is bound to have an impact that the dealer may choose to soak up or not, but irrespective I still need to find another deposit (£15K) if I want to lump down on a new SQ7.

Ok, its not got all the bells and whistles (no smartphone interface for example) but I have a pretty decent car and in 2/3 years it will be MY19 or something and all the kinks worked out that some of us have already experienced.

I think I'm going to sit tight, enjoy what I have and sit it out at least 18 months...

Thanks guys

Andy

Must work out quite a few £ / day ownership to trade it in so soon. Think your plan makes sense, I may trade "up" to a used approved SQ7 in a couple of years time. Main reason I ordered a new Q7 was because the prices for used approved (very few used private when I placed the order) weren't that different to the discounted price for a new one; that and I couldn't find any with a few key spec items!

Keep the Q7 and then you can get a pretty good weekend/when you fancy toy for your £15k?

I totally agree with you. I normal buy approved used 6 months old where the initial hit had been taken, my current A6 was 5 months old and nearly £14k off list. The Q7 wasn't doing the same. My discounted factory spec came in at a similar price to the dealer demo for sale and my spec was much higher. It made total sense to order new and wait for 4 months, my perfect spec and what I wanted. I've always had a compromise somewhere buying used. Are residuals going to stay so high for used Q7s or is the current gap between a long wait factory build and a used demo going to get much bigger?

Listening to how much fun those of you that have yours are having I wish the gap was bigger as I'd have one by now.

+1 , this was my logic with the RS3. Was an SQ7 and an A3 Tdi (or similar) or a Q7 and an RS3

Unfortunately I think the gap will widen quite a bit in the next 6 months once the supply meets the demand. With some cars you can pretty much own a car for a year and sell it for what you paid for it, as there is such restricted supply; but I don't think the Q7 will be in that category!

Can I ask why PCH is not being considered???

I have always found a PCP to absolute mad way to procure and have always purchased out right or as per my last two cars use the PCH product which has proved to be peanuts in comparison. I know of some extremely wealthy folk who do nothing but lease their exotica brand new on 12, 18 0r 24 month contract hire's.

I didn't look into PCH this time round but when I bought the X5 I did. I may have the spreadsheet somewhere so will try and dig it out. I can't remember by how much, but I do recall it didn't work out cheaper over the 3 year term I was initially planning for. It was a like for like comparison as I ended up buying the car through the PCH company, leveraging their discount with Stoke BMW to get a PCP deal.

I ruled out paying outright as I'm a contractor, so don't want to lock £70k into a car in case I have a lean spell and need cash to feed the family! Cost wise, it would make sense to do that though.

Thats interesting as I could not get a PCP to stack any where near a PCH. Regarding locking £70k cash into a car, agree........madness, something I could not consider. Big lumps of cash = more bricks and mortar.

In my case, I've had my last 3 (or is it 4) cars on PCH. For the Q7, the PCH prices (with options) were about £100 per month more than a PCP. That made it a no-brainer - at the end of the PCH I'd have nothing to show, with a PCP I may have some equity in the car.

I get you totally.
If I'm being totally honest, I there are only two reasons why I ever even looked at a Q7 over a Range Rover Autobiography:
1- 7 seats
2- The GUI and Navigation/Multimedia Interface for the entire Jaguar-Land Rover family is sooooo utterly the SH*T. I just couldn't bear to live with it. Not in an £80k car.
My dad had 2014 XJ-L and my mum got a 2013 RR Sport. Both loved everything about their cars bar the interface. In myums case, she hated it so much, she returned it 6months after delivery. My old man got rid of his this January and went back to an S- Class.

Until JLR update or make a user interface fit for the 21st century and for premium cars like theirs I can't ever own one. 😢 😢 😢

I agree. Andy sit tight. Let the 1st production batch roll out, and let the teething gremlins get ironed out. You'll be a happier SQ7 owner if you get it at the back end of 2017 or better yet, 2018.

Don't cancel on our account! It's just food for thought. As is the case with all new technology and engineering, model 1.0 will always have bugs, failings and glitches. If you can bear to wait even 6 months, then do so. That's what I usually do.

Plus I hate being an early adopter, only to see new features added 6 months after a launch

Agree, the RR tech looks so out of date and would be a deal killer. Even the newer systems in the new jag f pace looks tired in comparison to the AUDI tech. Makes it easier decision to be content with q7

Lol, I was kidding about cancelling! I know what you mean though; I bought my X5 on the day the brand new mode was launched. And a couple of months later they introduced a new all-LCD instrument cluster, new wheels. That really annoyed me. Plus little things like the boot badges got updated. I was just thinking that this time at least the new Q7 has been out for a while now so hopefully all of the tweaks and improvements will be carried over to the SQ7 as much as possible. Probably wrong here but I'm too excited to worry about it just now!

Exactly! It beggars belief that a premium group like JLR can make such a glaring ****-up. and it isn't new either! It's a 10 yr old problem that they seem to simply grow to prioritize addressing.
It's annoying because it's such a simple one to fix. If they don't want to build their own native system, they need only license i-Drive from BMW or MMI and then put their own skin over it.

Coz the day JLR do fix this, my marriage to Audi will be over quicker than a fight between Anthony Joshua and David Cameron.
