After 7 years of pretty much trouble free ownership, I'm contemplating changing my 97 110s estate(148k) for a newer model. 2 cars shortlisted are a 54 plate 130 highline withh 119k full vwsh and 1 owner for £6250 and 04 se130 70k 2 owners fsh £7695. Anybody got views on paying £1400 more for a lower mileage car.

In one respect I would go for the lower mileage car... but always (imho) to go for the one which is has been looked after better, ie has more history.

A few scratches on the paint work can always be fixed but the mechanicals are harder to to check. so VW service history is very important. A slightly older car with less milage may be an even better buy?

I recently bought an early 2002 130TDi Sport estate with lower mileage (58k), interior was perfect but had some light parking scratches but a faultless history for £6650.

As regards milage, I think the most importatnt thing is how the car was normally driven and where.

For instance, engine in a car with high motorway milage will alsmost always be in better condition than a lower milage car that has been used mostly in town. Most wear occurs when starting and warming-up & therefore crusing along the motorway will be causing almost negligable wear. Also things like brakes etc. will take more of a hammering in start-stop town driving.

HOWEVER, if driver likes driving boot-to-the-board and practices ABS inducing stops from 70 MPH +, I suppost opposite could be true!

What about a Skoda Superb? The same car under the skin but better built, longer and with more kit for the money.

I just bought a highline estate to replace my S saloon - the Mrs bought a dog. I have to say, the extras in the highline are very nice - heated leather seats etc.... All other things being equal, I'd go for that.
