We have a 2011 2.0TDi Tiguan. At 35000 miles it started losing coolant
It turned out to be a waterpump leak.
This is apparently a common fault
They remove the cambelt when replacing the pump so I just paid for the parts to get the belt replaced at the same time.
It may be worth considering replacing the waterpump when it comes to cambelt change time even if you do not have a problem.
The big cost is labour - see this comment from a disgruntled customer Golf Water Pump Failure | Technical matters | Back Room Forum | Honest John (http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=44105)

I was informed that if you can see coolant under the car it is likely to be the waterpump but if you are losing fluid and there is no obvious leak you may be losing it into the EGR (which is potentially really expensive)

I had paid for an extra years warranty with VW - it was less than the cost of the pump replacement.
With the cost of labour and the complexity of even basic cars I am starting to think that the cost of a warranty is just another running cost for the car.
