engine rev problems???

i have an old 1996 a4 1.9 tdi and recently at 2100 revs when i change into second gear the engine cuts out. it doesn't happen all the time, however if i accelerate through this level the rev needle swings wildly until the transient is complete. there was a leak coming in through the bonnent release catch which is now fixed and although i doubt this problem was related it is the only other defect i have. can anone offer any suggestions ortips as to what this may be? t

Sounds odd. Have you tried replacing anything yet? Could be a number of things like the MAF, flywheel, clutch etc. You could do with rigging it up to VAGCOM and looking for some fault codes.
