View Full Version : New Q7 S-Line - 20" or 21" Wheels?

Am really torn here...

20" 'Parallel Spoke' wheels are (for some reason) more economical than the 21s and should result is a slightly comfier ride.
21" 'Twin Spoke' wheels are a nicer style (IMO - although marginal)

Torn between looks and practicality, and the obvious £1100 difference in price!! When you consider you can buy a set of non OEM wheels and tyres for not much more and still have your 20s...that is a lot of extra money for a bit more metal and less tyre!

What wheels did you go with, and why?

Stuck with the 20's not worth it in my opinion. The bigger the wheel the more chance of cracks, more expensive rubber all over and above the initial cost. However I am still considering what to put my winter rubber on?

Pretty much at the same conclusion. Difference in rubber is about £20 a corner from a quick look, nothing too drastic. Will probably run the 20s until the rubber needs replacing and then maybe buy some 21s with new rubber then.

Have never bothered with winter/summer switches on a 4x4

Neither have I. Considering we only get 3 hours of summer in the UK anyway! I find it redundant to get winter tyres/wheels. I'd rather stick with all weather tyres that have the best possible braking specs and wet weather specs. We're more likely to need tyres that will keep you safe in the wet than needing tyres that'll keep you safe in the snow.

Same here, stuck with the 20"'s as spec'd the car with air suspension so wanted to stick with the comfort element and as its wifeys primary car less chance of pranging the lower profile 21"s (albeit I agree they look marginally better but not worth it at £1100 extra)

Pranging of 21s did also cross my mind ... 20s it is. Thanks for making me feel better about the 20s!!

haha no worries, you've got to draw the line somewhere ( I added full leather and bose after my initial order but stopped at 21's), list of options can get out of hand!

I've got the 21's Turbine style... I've got to say, with the air suspension they are pretty comfy and didnt notice the difference when I drove the Demo on 20's.... Just saying :swordfigh

My Q7 had the standard 20 inch wheels and I drove it for about two months, courtesy Q7 that I've had for the last two and a half months has the 21 inch turbine design wheels and I honestly didn't notice a difference in ride quality.
The replacement car that is on order now is specced with the 21 inch wheels as I definitely preferred the looks.

Lovely! Plus the profile on the new Q7 21's is no where near as low as what was on the old Q7. These ones are half sensible and deliver a much better ride. Especially with air suspension.

These 21's are a profile 40, right? Where as the old one had 35's. They were barely a strip of black rubber!

Maybe worth the look at tyre replacement costs if that is of concern - the big tyres can get pricey!

Andy are your turbine wheels original spec and colour? They look darker titanium finish?

I stuck with 20s just to spend that cash on other stuff on the inside [emoji5]

I spent a great deal of time stalking the local dealership and came to the conclusion that given the bulk of the car the standard S Line 20's just looked plain wrong, size and style.

I have opted for the 21" turbine's which IMO look great on black and fill the arches nicely

Each to there own of course.

Nemo, they are the factory 21 Tubrines yes but I had them resprayed in Black when the car got wrapped in the Matte Black finish you see it in. (along with grille/roof bars etc)

20s are 285/45 and 21s are 285/40. Quick look on black circles shows about £20 a corner difference (£210 v £230 for continental I think it was), not a massive difference.

I can still switch to 21s, have a week or so to do it, but am confused why the fuel consumption would go up with larger wheels? Rolling radius is almost identical, so won't impact gearing in any significant way. Obviously more metal and less rubber means more weight, but really...enough to make such a difference?

Personally I was looking between the two twin spoke designs. Not a fan of the turbines, but all personal preference.

Am considering getting some SQ7 replicas in a year or so.

Oooh very nice didn't pay attention to the car [emoji5]

Have you got a pic of the grille etc? Would like to see that...

For me I am perfectly happy with the standard 20" the 21" do look slightly best cosmetically but not a great deal.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160324/12354739e10e709049dbc5c9b02d5bf1.jpg

Well I don't have the air suspension so certainly happy with the 20" for a more comfortable ride and less road noise.

The parallel spoke 21s were the style on my S5...so easy to clean!

The standard 20s are a little harder but only a little

I loved the 21" turbine alloys but as the spec moves up and up at some point you have to stop and that was the breaking point for me. The standard s-line 20" look great and the 1500 i've saved looks even more fantastic sitting in my bank account.

Summer tyres are better in wet weather than all weather tyres.

Also note that the treadwear for tyres available on 20 are longer-lasting than anything available on 21.

AWD does not help reducing braking distance or hydroplaning, so winter/summer tyres are still as much of a benefit with AWD as with any. But yeah, almost no one does the swap. I decided to though.

I negotiated the Audi Q7 winter wheel package into my Q7 order. I always change my wheels over in the winter as the winter rubber dramatically improves cold wet we sat her grip and braking. Plus the nice 21" twin spokes summer set wont get trashed by grit and salt. Quattro may be better grip while accelerating, but all cars are 4x4 for braking....

Well worth having in my view.
