1998 golf gti stalling and surging

My Golf gti has a problem with surging whilst driving and losing power - it also stalls at stop signs.... can anyone help. I have been told it could be the catalytic convert!! :zx11:

How does itperform on idle.Is it eratic?

no problems on idle it runs around 8 to 10 on idle

Take a look at throtle body.Maybe it needs cleaning and then basic seting.
