My W Reg 1.9 TDI 115 etsate is great but when I bougt it it had a towbar on it, which was also great cos I have a Trailer that I pull, however when I'm not pulling the trailer, sometimes the suspention bottoms out to the point whre the mud flaps scrap the road, and when I'm towing does this too although I've not noticed that it's more so when towing.
I have noticed that when the car is stationary it looks OK from a side on view, yet when I pushh down on the towbar its seems very very soft, so my question is:
1 Is this normal:confused:
2 Does the springs need replacing:confused:
3 Does the shocks need replacing:confused:
4 Does the shocks and the spings need replacing:zx11:

YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE

Hmm, I reckon it could be either shocks, or springs, or both!

If I were you, I'd get it checked out damn quick. If anyone tells you a spring can't break, they lie to you. It happened to me once, thankfully at low speed. Should that happen at motorway speed whilst towing, a nasty crash would be most likely!

Could well be the springs actually. Bend a paperclip over and over and it gets softer, until it snaps.

If you bounch the rear of the car and it doesn't stop as soon as it gets back to it's normal position, then it's the shocks. Compare it to the front.

gave VW a ring today, they tell me that there is a kit that I can fit to stop the suspension bottoming out!!!! going to call back tomorrow, may take the car to them just so they can have a quick look, I have seen some spring assistors theat just fit in the coil of the springs.

I have inspected the rear suspension, everything looks good, I have spoken to VW Cardiff, it appears that I already have what they call heavy duty springs and shocks,MMmmmm just wondering if I should fit a set of towing assistors (doughnuts), will let you know how I get on, these should be OK http://www.towsure.com/default.asp?t=6462 (http://www.towsure.com/default.asp?t=6462)

GOOD NEWS:D I purchased the said items from Towsure fitted them, this was dead easy jack car up, remove wheel, measure the gap in the centre of spring, ordered part, these were 40-50mm cost about 14.99 + postage, boil them up to make them supple smothered some washing up liquid over them and just slipped them in, held in place with some zip ties, cooled down with hose pipe before lowering jack, and there is an immediate change to the cars rear suapention, slighty higher ride hieght although I think that this is more how it originaly looked, and the handling is slightly better, the steering fells a little more possative.
