A smell indicates a leak, or maybe an overfilled tank.
Due to the age of the car, your query should be taken up by a dealer.

Possibly a DPF regen also. Do you do a lot of town driving?

My local garage has checked for leaks etc , Do tend to fill tank to max when filling , will bear this in mind as not a constant problem . Driving is varied , town , A roads and Motorways

Does the car have an aux cabin heater fitted, powered by diesel? If the smell mainly happens when cold near to or under 7 deg C, it could be this. The heater is either in the engine compartment or possibly under the cabin floor in an MPV.

Check your manifold exhaust for leaks
Also breather pipes in engine
