Hi all,

Looking for some advice, when I brake there is a shuddering that is quite prominent mainly felt in the brake pedal, passengers cant really feel it.

A mechanic I use told me its the ball joints and wish bones
VW told me it was the drive shaft boot both left and right damaged (one is more expensive than the other for some reason)

Another garage has told me it is a warped disc so front brakes need replacing

I have no idea but sounds like the warped disc makes the most sense as it only happens when I brake and it shudders a lot more when I brake at high speeds. Apart from that there is a bit of clunking type sound (almost like something is a bit loose) on an uneven road but nothing that sounds too concerning.

Any ideas?

Also (and this is the main reason for my thread) - best place to get front discs and pads? is it worth up grading to anything other than standard manufacturer?

Thanks in advance

the juddering probably is a disc either warped or got a flat spot or rusty. the clonking is probably the wishbone balljoints, and if the cv boots are split then thats an mot fail which you should get sorted now as 2 new boots is cheaper than 2 new cv joints. so its sounds like all 3 could well be right in one way or another. it does sound like it might be time to get the car properly serviced and inspected as theres probably a few bits n bobs need doing.

Has anyone done the correct thing and suggested measuring the disc and wheel bearing hub run-out?

I had a 2010 A5 in a few weeks back with shaking at speed and braking, part of it was two bent wheels and part was heavy rust under the disc bell between the disc and the hub, which caused the discs to distort.

thanks for your replies. its just had an MOT and passed with no advisories. no one has said anything about wheel bearing hub run out.

not part of the mot mate. so long as the brakes pull up enough on the rollers then the brakes are good as far as an mot goes.

If at some point you do get new front discs fitted, I strongly suggest that the hub runout is checked. For a car with ABS this should not be greater than 0.015-mm, yes I did type 0.015-mm - not a lot! If it is not possible to measure the hubs, then replacing the front wheel bearings would be a good idea, they are much easier to do on the PQ35 platform than they were on the previous PQ34 as they just unbolt from behind - no press required.
