Hello

so not long ago i changed my front pads and discs with genuine items and today I noticed a little brake clunk when going in reverse at very low speed. You can literally press the brake pedal on and off and can hear a slight clunk from the pads.

Now is there anything I can do to resolve this issue?

The only thing I did was recently took the pads out to clean them due to squealing from the pads. I then applied copper grease to the pads and where they meet the caliper. Wondering if this provides too much movement now? Maybe I should strip them down and remove the copper grease?

Brake work like they should but this pad shift is annoying as hell and slounds horrible.

Any help appreciated?

Genuine pads should not do that, where did they come from?

They came from audi dealer mate. Its really annoying tbh and considering swapping pads from each side to see if it makes a difference.

If they are from an Audi dealer, take the car to the dealer with your parts department invoice and ask them to inspect them under the terms of the two year parts and labour guarantee.

I suspect the audi dealer will fob me off as I fitted them myself. I have done loads of brake installs and this did not proove to be difficult.

I'm thinking maybe the main fitting pin has bent or something like that.

What d you think? It only is audible when in reverse and feels like the piston coming on and off the caliper as iff there is too much gap between the pad and piston. I was thinking maybe a shim kit will bridge that gap or should I not bother

Only thing I have done recently is the bedding in process where I got up to 70mph and then braked down to 20mph and did this a few times.

I don't disagree with that procedure, but the dealer may, so I wouldn't mention it.
Have you checked the guide pins, caliper retaining bolts etc?? A worn lower ball joint can sometimes clunk when braking in reverse??

The thing is that it only clunks when presseing and depressing brake pedal. It definitely sounds like the brake piston hitting the pad and then releasing

A shim kit would solve the issue but there isn't one, the noise will be the pads shifting up and down during fore and aft travel respectively and not the piston hitting the pad. Which size brakes are they? An attachment parts set may help.

Did you use the pad fitting kit 7L0 698 269 A?

Yes used the fitting kit supplied by audi. New pin etc.

What do you think?

In my experience with Brembo calipers on the Q7, 944 and Leon Cupra R, I find the stainless steel sliders above and below each pad become corroded and prevent new pads from fitting so they have to be removed, the seating face cleaned and the sliders tapped flat and re-fitted, all a bit painful when just doing pads. Because of this, I have seen people grind down the sides of the pads to get them in, anything like this happen?

The discs are labeled left and right you did know that did you?
have you got pads right way round too as the inner and outer pads have different backplates/anti rattle shims.

I knew about the disk but think i may have not got the pads in right way. Will check.

In terms of disk direction to confirm its right disk for driver side and left disk for passenger side??

All handing observations are made sitting in the drivers seat looking forwards.

Why are the discs sided? I've never seen that before.

air vents running in correct direction of rotation

So after spending a day on stripping the brakes down I finally got rid of the clunk. In the end it was the bracket which holds the pads in, it basically bent forward a little. I straightened it out and hey presto no clunk. I can only assume it bent a little when i was bedding in the brakes.

The bracket itself holds the pads in and the arms bent a little.
